tcfishler (65), USA Dec 26, 2006 Clear dark brown, with a voluminous and pillowy light tan head that sticks around stubbornly.
Rich but not excessively sweet nose of raisins and molasses.
Flavors are slightly sweeter than the nose, with plenty of the same notes (raisins, molasses). Body is medium, with somewhat low carbonation. There’s a yeasty cast to the flavors here that I haven’t found in other doppels. I can’t say I care for this last characteristic much.
Not my favorite doppel - too sweet and yeasty in the mouth. However, it’s a joy to smell this beer. mephisto (1144), Taiwan Dec 22, 2006 caramelly aroma with hint of coffee and nut; it has brown copper color with brownish head. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 22, 2006 Rich malty aroma. Chocolate and raisins, molasses and brown sugar. Herbal-like essences infused in caramelized sugars. Mild floral hops. I love the memories from doppelbock smells. Dark brown-black clear, with foamy off-white (almost tan) lacing head. Heavy watery body with medium carbonation. Starts with great molasses worty goodness. Sweet in all the right places with brown sugar and caramelized flavors. Mild herbal essences and candied oranges. Finish is pretty clean with some balancing dryness. Not bitter at all. Sweet nutty after with just a hint of smokiness. TheEpeeist (1429), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 21, 2006 16.9 oz bottle. Clear blood brown puffs up a billowy tan head. Leaves an island without lace. Soapy burnt orange juice and leather. Fresh plums melt into dark chocolate. Gently drying with lingering notes of coffee, lime, apple and allspice. Carb is not really noticeable but still cuts through the medium body to produce a wonderful drinker. Reminds me of a good cigar. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 19, 2006 Updated: Aug 27, 2007I am generally not a fan of bocks and doublebocks as they tend to have a vegetal element that I find a bit distasteful. This beer had a vegetal element but one that reminded me more of a tasty V8 that I found to be rather pleasant. Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a large brown head. The aroma was sour and tangy molasses with a v8 element underneath. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. The flavor was rich and savor dark malts and molasses. There is again a V8 undertone. The finish is marvelously long. Very nice! bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Dec 8, 2006 Bottle. Mahogony beer with a nice beige head. Earthy, malty aroma. Big rich carmalized malt flavor with some backing earth and spice. Lingering caramel. Medium body. Well balanced. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Nov 26, 2006 Bottle. Chestnut brown color with a beige head. Sweet, earthy aroma with caramel and chocolate notes as well as some dark fruit. Sweet roasted (or even burnt) caramel flavours with nuts and raisins. Medium-bodied. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 13, 2006 Updated: Jul 11, 2008Label says malt liquor, so guess what I’m envisioning? Well this is the 180 degree opposite of those cheap pale yellow american 40’s found in the bar. Slight overripe fermented grape or crushed raison aroma in wood.. Pours dark but not opaque in my happy steeler stein. Leathery intial hit on the taste buds. Nice palate but could use slightly more carbonation. Licorice finish with a little bitterness but not offensive. Has all the complexities of bitter stouts without the bitterness. That dude on the front looks like he drank a few of the 1 pint 9 oz bottles !
