Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA Jul 30, 2006 Rick brown color with a lighter colored brown, big bubbled head. Aroma is mostly burnt caramel and chocolate. Taste is smokey with a richer amount of caramel than the aroma. This is one fucking great beer. I like that there’s not a sickeningly sweet amount of sugar in this. The mouthfeel and body are just perfect. Nice dryness and an almost charcoal taste, like ashed paper instead of a charcoal fire. Maybe burnt marshmallows and chocolate. Gimme s’more! Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Jul 16, 2006 Large brown head of fine dense bubbles. Light carbonation. Head retention is very good. Sweet and malty aroma with molasses, raisins and brown sugar. Little acidic nose. Color is a very dark crimson brown. Sweet and malty flavor with a lot of molasses. Some roasted grains and more raisins. Maybe a little maple also. Finish is sweet and slick. Alcohol is hidden very well. A pretty good dopplebock. alafito (334), tijuana, Mexico Jul 8, 2006 Thanks to Mane for this from Germany! Too bad it went bad... i could smell and taste a delicious nuty, roasted background with some fruitiness.. behinde the metalic and acid sunburnt beer. Ill have to retaste someday, i feel it could have been great.. meanwhile il just score it to par with average. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 7, 2006 Thanks to whaleman for this...
Appears a dark brown with a red hue and a 2 finger tan head that slowly fades out. Scattered lace is left around the glass.
Smell is of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, and malty syrup.
Taste is of the same aromas.
Mouthfeel is slightly thin in a medium bodied brew featuring the cocoa, caramel with a sweetness up front. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Jul 7, 2006 Bottle. Extremely dark ruby beer with a creamy, rocky, lacy light brown head. Smells of sweet malt, caramel, brown sugar; even has an aromatic hop presence. Taste is sweetly malty with lots of dark ntoes and even some roasted. Brown sugar, dust, toffee, molasses, chocolate, caramel, toastmalt, touch of spiciness ... but really, the story here is the massive amount of malt. Full-bodied, alcohol is well-hidden, slightly terminal warming but not too much. Slightly sticky, but really only on the lips. Medium-dry hoppy finish. Have to force myself to slow down whilst drinking. Superb! gunnfryd (3539), Kristiansand, Norway Jul 6, 2006 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is fruity roasted coffeel. Flavour is fruity roasted coffee with elements of hop. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Jul 3, 2006 I gotta admit.. when these get poured into their official glass, I pour as violently as possible. Now that that’s out of the way... At $2.40 for a .5L bottle this was a steal. Deep mahogony body with a large head. Aroma is dark malts with notes of caramel, chocolate, toffee. Dangerously drinkable, very tasty. Quite sweet. Almost no hops. funkengruven (5), Hamilton, Ontario, Canada does not count Jun 29, 2006 This I picked up as one of three new offerings at the LCBO I decided to sample.
This poured beautifuly into my pilsener glass a deep chestnut brown with a slight ring of head and some lacing. Smell is a tad metallic but has some deep roasted malt notes in there. This stuff tastes very good, roasted malts make their way through the flavor with a bitterness that quickly subsides to a remarkable smoothness. Very easy to drink, goes down very nicely.
This is a great beer.
