Reddish brown color with a fluffy white head. Strong malty sweet aroma with slight hints of plum. Sweet but not syrupy. Actually sort of thin with lots of apple juice type notes. Not a bad beer by any stretch but the high average rating surprises me some.

A contradictory beer. On opening it has much in common with a cola; fizzy hiss when uncapped, pours with a thin, fizzy head that dissappears almost instantly. Copper brown cola-like color. Complex malty nose that gets more interesting when tasted. The flavor suprised me; lightly roasted, malty, very enjoyable. Looks one way, tastes another.

50 cl. bottle. No yeast at the bottom. Dark brown colour with a small head. Sweet and malty aroma with hints of alcohol. Nice smooth flavour of malt, sweetness and hints of roastedness too. Very enjoyable.

Very malty with a slight hint of smoke and lickorice. Intense dark colour and very little head. Very easy to drink, despite the thick, concentrated flavor and high alcohol. A truly wonderful experience!

Very deep mahogany color with a small off white head. Sweet malt/molasses aroma. Starts with more sweet molasses flavor. Dark fruits and then roasted chocolate flavors. Slight bitter chocolate finish. Great beer from an historic brewery.

Pours clear mahogany with a thin but dense white head. Light molassis, metallic aroma, still cold maybe. Taste begins with light sweetness and a mineral, earthy bitterness. Molassis for sure, really nice hops compliment this with a earthy, floral bitterness. Finish is smooth, oily, with hints of cinnamon and toasted malt. Body is straightforward, lightly viscous, slight butteriness. Quite well balanced for what it is, and much less metallic and offensve that most other bottled German offerings that make it over here.

Tap @ Spuyten Duyvil. Up against Andechser Doppelbock dunkel, this one is actually quite a bit darker (it is a nice deep mahagony amber/clear and nice head) and is thicker, and sweeter. Aroma is sweet candied fruits, molasses, tons of dark munich malts, bready, and smooth as hell. Fully body and mouthfell with a sweet finish, but definitely not cloying. Great doppelbock.

Purchased in a 1 pint 0.9 oz bottle. Pours an opaque midnight brown, thin head but nice lacing. Aroma is very malty and very pronounced. Full palate as expected from a bock with a crisp hop aftertaste. I like to experience the palate of a beer before I review the flavor, because it is easier to describe. The flavor is somewhat sweet, but not cloying with hints of prunes. Kind of reminds me of a Thomas Hardy, but much more muted. Very impressive. By far, the best doppelbock I’ve had.
