Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Mar 27, 2006 Pours clear mahogany with a thin but dense white head. Light molassis, metallic aroma, still cold maybe. Taste begins with light sweetness and a mineral, earthy bitterness. Molassis for sure, really nice hops compliment this with a earthy, floral bitterness. Finish is smooth, oily, with hints of cinnamon and toasted malt. Body is straightforward, lightly viscous, slight butteriness. Quite well balanced for what it is, and much less metallic and offensve that most other bottled German offerings that make it over here. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 26, 2006 Tap @ Spuyten Duyvil. Up against Andechser Doppelbock dunkel, this one is actually quite a bit darker (it is a nice deep mahagony amber/clear and nice head) and is thicker, and sweeter. Aroma is sweet candied fruits, molasses, tons of dark munich malts, bready, and smooth as hell. Fully body and mouthfell with a sweet finish, but definitely not cloying. Great doppelbock. Tubbfan (144), Joliet, Illinois, USA Mar 15, 2006 Purchased in a 1 pint 0.9 oz bottle. Pours an opaque midnight brown, thin head but nice lacing. Aroma is very malty and very pronounced. Full palate as expected from a bock with a crisp hop aftertaste. I like to experience the palate of a beer before I review the flavor, because it is easier to describe. The flavor is somewhat sweet, but not cloying with hints of prunes. Kind of reminds me of a Thomas Hardy, but much more muted. Very impressive. By far, the best doppelbock I’ve had. rsmeds (220), Turku, Finland Mar 11, 2006 Bottle.
Virtually opaque black, with a small beige head.
Sweetish aroma of caramel or molasses and mildly roasted malt.
Flavor features hops combined with a somewhat dryer encore of midly roasted malt. Some tangy sourness there as well. Bitter aftertaste. Joshw (14), Germany Mar 4, 2006 This is a fantastic beer. I had heard of the brewery Weltenburger near Kelheim and managed to make it down there. From the pour the beer is deep brown with a caramel head that lasts a couple of minutes. The aroma is intense and bold with notes of caramel, chocolate, and slight notes of licorice. The flavor fills the mouth with very intense notes of chocolate, caramel, and dark bread. It stimulates every taste bud, starting at the tip and working its way to the back of the tongue and then lingers in the back of the throat transforming into a slightly bitter aftertaste. This is truly one of the best bocks in the world. . .great for those cold winter nights. . .just like tonight CatweazleTroms (2), Tromsø, Norway does not count Feb 23, 2006 Very dark and heavy. Malty, sweet and just delicious. Don’t drink it to cold! fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Feb 20, 2006 Dark color with a fizzy head. Aroma dominated by the malt, caramel and light liquorice. The body is round, with enough malt; a lot of caramel, some chocolate; ending a bit metallic and dryer on the tongue. Ordinary. mabjork (580), Vasa, Finland Feb 19, 2006 Bottled. Dark brown in colour, almost black. Minor beige head. The aroma contains burnt malt with hints of smoke. The flavour is sweet and ou can taste malt and smoke. A smoky and alty after taste.
