frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Oct 26, 2005 Clear but densely colored, caramel/red with a huge, spongy tan head with effervescence rising in streams. Insanely sweet-malted aroma was caramel, candy bar & chocolate with slight mustiness. Flavor was sweet and astringent, the alcohol being overdone. It was like sipping a thin whisky, whereas I would have preferred tasting the thick malts that I perceived in the aroma. Finish is earthen with an alcohol gut-burn. This beer starts well, ends disappointingly.

KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Oct 16, 2005 Updated: Oct 17, 2005Bottle. Aroma is mollasses. Flavor isn’t far behind. A beer worth revvisitting. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 10, 2005 (Bottle 50 cl) 6,5% ABV in my version. Light brown with a rich and frothy head that fades a bit too fast. Very full-bodied and malty with a sweet, lightly caramelish touch. Yet a dry bitterness in the finish making a balanced and harmonious Doppelbock. Good, solid stuff. 220801 BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Sep 29, 2005 This was a great beer. Very strong in flavor highly carbonated. Great head with a dark brown color. Nice and cloudy just as syle would dictate. Good strong bread aroma no esthers sweet with an awesome flavor. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 28, 2005 Clear and dark, with reddish overtones that become more visible as the amount of beer in the glass diminishes, with a huge coffee colored head that fades and leaves lacing down the side of the glass. Great complexity, with sweet dark roast, coffee and chocolate, bitter hops, and a slightly sour undertown, with a chocolate and bitter finish. Kind of dry tannic mouthfeel and an alcohol warmth. Celebrator is a more striking doppelbock, but this is easier to drink. Cable (286), SE, Oklahoma, USA Sep 25, 2005 Sampled from bottle. Pours a clear, very dark brown with a ruby tint. A thick tan head tops this bock and nice lace is present down the glass. Aroma is intense malt with some prune notes. Flavor is balanced with complex malt, much like molasses. No hops in the aroma or flavor. Full-bodied, smooth and warming with low to moderate carbonation. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 20, 2005 09.01.01. Ruby with brown streaks and a thin, tan head. Sweet, malty aroma of varied nuts, caramel, brown sugar, some light chocolate, licorice and a touch of warm alcohol. The body is smooth and easy on the tongue, but not as thick or robust as I would have hoped. The flavors have melded well, almost too well, making this seem one-dimensional, as opposed to robust and complex. The sweentess and light roasted character almost completely cancel each other out. The finish is dry and warming. I wasn’t sure what the date on the label translates to (YMD? DMY? MDY?), but my guess is that this beer has been around for a while. I’d love to try a fresh example of this. Perhaps if I’d paid attention at the grocery store over the past couple of years, I might have been able to... MiP (8793), Sønderborg, Denmark Sep 19, 2005 Bottle. Sweet aroma, dried fruit. Cloudy, reddish, dark brown colour. Thick stable head. Nice flavour. Malty, well-balanced alcohol flavour. Coffee aftertaste. Very satisfying.
