MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Dec 11, 2004 I haven’t liked a bock this much before! Pours a dark body, almost black in colour. Aroma is malty, nutty with some roasted sugar. Taste is huge roasted, nutty and malt characters, with sweet hints, and just the right amount of biterness. Alcohol not really noticable. A really balanced example of the style! mustang3 (254), Whitby, Canada Dec 10, 2004 Thankfully the LCBO brings thisi in every year. Very dark brown tending to black with a small white head. Aroma and taste have s strong roasted quality which balances out nicely the malt sweetness. Delicous. pintbypint (1002), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Dec 7, 2004 500ml brown bottle. Very dark pour - mahognay coloured brew with a superb 2 finger tan head. Chocolate aroma. Nice dark malt flavours, some fruitiness, pleasant roasted malts, cocoa, a bit bittersweet. Lighter in body than I expected and also alcohol stays well hidden. A smooth doppelbock. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 3, 2004 Updated: Apr 23, 2006Bottle. I had heard nothing of this beer, so imagine by surprise when I tried it from the lcbo winter release! It quickly mad up for my grand cru disappointment! Very dark drown pour, almost black. Small tan head. Very strong chocolate and caramel aroma. Taste is full bodied, with slight hops at the end and in the middle all the malty sweetness and dark chocolate flavours you can handle. Lovely. This is a wonderful warming strong malty, grainy beer, a true beer for the season that gets thicker as it warms. I will be buying more of this for sure.
Re-rate. Neat to see what you think of a beer over a year alter, when your palette has changed. This one held up very well, but I think having it on a chilly winter evening (old rating) as to know (decent spring day) makes a difference. I still like it, it is among the best Bocks I have ever had, but I found the body a little thin, probably on style, but not enough to justify my overall rating. It looks good, tastes rich and caramel like, but doesn’t have a ton of aroma. A really really good Bock that I overrated before. original 9-5-9-4-16
mullet (798), Melbourne, Australia Nov 28, 2004 Fricken hell - how does this rate so high!!?? Quite dark, clear with a well-retained greyish head. Toast, peanut butter, berry and soy sauce aroma - a bit weird. A bit too roasty, bitter and alcoholic and not overly malty. A bit sour and roasty with some broccoli. Not as bad as I make it sound but it’s not real good. dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 21, 2004 This is fabulous! Pours jet black with a quick fading but hazy beige head that gets reabsorbed back into the black tar rich in roasted aromas floral esters and a slight hint of cake icing! The taste is smooth, spicy, woodsy, and definitely earthy with hints of nutmeg. Nutty and balances bitters. Fabulousness! ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Nov 8, 2004 Dark brown colour with nice light brown head. Aroma is sweet with some roasted malts. Flavor has some caramel and chocolate notes. Palate is almost syrup like. All in all a very nice doppelbock. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Nov 3, 2004 I saw this pour out the bottle a thick, dark brown color, but when it hit the glass it turned black with a dark brown head that soon vanished. The aroma is rich, sweet and malty. The taste is of chocolates and caramel and burnt malt and a dab of fruits. A very thick and smooth, tasty drink
