igel (196), New Mexico, USA Oct 31, 2004 A pretty red/mahogany color, lively with effervescence, transparent and a full tan head. Lace is sticky and the retention is fair. The aroma is of malt (earthy), caramel, and oak and lightly acrid. Flavor has a malty sweet start, an acerbic middle and a tart/dry finish. No strong hop finish. Palate is medium bodied, syrupy and surprisingly flat. An enjoyable double bock without the sharp acrid finishes of other brands. Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark Oct 25, 2004 A classic German doppelbock. Dark brown/red with a light brown head. Sweet and heavy aroma. Roasted malt, caramel, bread and spices. Chocolate dominates the flavor with some citrusy and fruity notes. Bitter towards the long lasting finish. Dry. A very nice and warming beer. Jukkabro (2981), Tampere, Finland Oct 15, 2004 Almost black colored, big nice beige lasting head. Sweet caramel and chocolate aroma with roasted malts, excellent one! Strong roasted malt and caramel flavor ends with dry hopping. Chocolate lasts long with nicely dry mouthfeel. Body is surprisingly bland, after aroma and having ABV 7.2%. High alcohol content does not show in aroma or flavor, well hidden. Alcohol comes up slightly in aftertaste, gives you warm mouthfeel. With more body rating would have started with 4, still very good and complex doppelbock.. HopsOrDie (687), New Lenox, Illinois, USA Oct 13, 2004 Dark brown with a light brown head. Very sweet smelling with hints of leather, roasted grain, caramel, and a little smoke; in a word: complex. Flavor is surprising vinous with hints of smoked and roasted malt. Thin enough to be very easy to drink, but not so thin to detract. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Oct 10, 2004 The DM & Hotstuff’s European Honeymoon trip beer number 54. This draft brew from the Unionsbrau brauhaus in Munich Germany poured a medium sized head of light brown colored finely sized mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a semi-opaque dark brown colored uncarbonated body. It had a semi-vinous aroma with heavy dark malt notes. The mouth feel was also vinous with dark malt and caramel flavors in a mild vinous finish that also contained a note of licorice. I really enjoyed this one. Gromit (460), Port Orchard, Washington, USA Sep 29, 2004 Very nice...
Pours an incredibly dark red/black with a decent head that left minimal lacing.
Scent is strong of coffee and malt.
Taste is coffee/toffee and dark fruits.
Palate has a nice mineral feel to it. It’s thick without being very carbonated. Overall it’s rather nice and offers a nice challange to Celebrator/Salvatore, and worth giving a try. chriso (4678), London, Greater London, England Sep 14, 2004 Very deep garnet red colour. Low carbonation. Pronounced cocoa and malt aroma, with vinous, woody and musty undertones. Sweet burnt malt flavours up front, with licorice and caramel and a lactic edge towards the finish. A very rich beer. My only minor quibble is that the mouthfeel gets a bit sticky after a while. Otherwise excellent. 500ml bottle from beersofeurope.co.uk. BBE 22 October 2004.
steve23mj (273), Essexville, Michigan, USA Sep 10, 2004 Pours deep reddish with mild tan-like head. Big sweet malty nose. Flavors of raisins, chocolate and roasted caramel. Slight smoky finish.
