Hab40oz (242), Grants Pass, Oregon, USA Jun 23, 2004 I like this Bock, its a german style, not the best I’ve had. I think Wild River and Samuel Adams make far superior Bock’s however this beer has some good appeal. Pours very dark with a light beige head and little or no lacing. Very malty sweet aroma, coupled with a sweet smoky taste. wunderbier (1264), Tampere, Finland Jun 17, 2004 Updated: Jul 12, 2008Deeply reddish brown under a fluffy tan froth. Rich dark bread and rum-raisin aroma, sweet and thick with malt. Succulent melanoidins and cocoa nibs open for tight biscuits and a veil of sherry; buttery cocoa aftertaste. Oily, nicely attenuated, background carbonation.
Chewy flavours wickedly combined with a quaffable body.
50 cl bottle, best before 4 December 2008.
Bottle, tulip glass. Average sized, creamy, light brown head sits on a deep brown body. Caramel, cookie, molasses, chocolate malt (H); prune, date, brown sugar, vanilla aromas. Moderately sweet flavor becomes a moderately sweet, lightly bitter finish. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. The bottom line is: the body is a bit thin and there’s not as much chocolate in the flavor as I was hoping for.
AlphaOne (142), Australia Jun 16, 2004 Dark ruby appearance with a nice fine bubbled brownish head. Rich toasy, caramelized maltyness, with anise and slight fruityness, mainly cherry. rich warming biscuity sweet maltyness, a little grainy/bready flavour and cherry, rhubarb and toasted caramel bitter finish, quite dry. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Jun 4, 2004 Aroma of roasted malts, licorice and a hint of vegetabled or herbs, which gives the aroma an unique character. Quite well-balanced. Clear, dark-brown coloured with a lasting brown head. Unfortunately the creamy head doesn’t remain as big as the head of the hefe weizen dunkel I drank before. Taste is of well-balanced roasted malts and licorice/coffee. Perhaps some berry-like fruits in it. Bit sticky, but smooth mouthfeel. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Jun 1, 2004 Clear dark brown color, small lasting brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice, coffee and vegetable (laurel perhaps indeed). Taste is complex of roasted malts, licorice. Very nice doppelbock indeed! jerohen (1602), Bussum, Netherlands May 30, 2004 Clear brown coloured, brown head. Roasted malty aroma. Roasted malts and brown sugar flavour. Thick mouthfeel. Pretty good bock bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands May 16, 2004 Buttery roasted malt aroma. Full bodied, almost fat. Laurel and roasted malt in the flavor. Very malty, sweet, but enough other flavors to compensate. Lovely bock beer with enough finesse and complexity for added quality. The rating is well earned. shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 10, 2004 A little too syrupy and sweet for my taste, and the balancing bitterness seemed mostly due to its alcohol content -- by the way, my bottle said this was 6.9%. That said, it’s quite dark, rich, and tasty, I just wish the carbonation would last a bit longer. Very malty with hints of cocoa, coffee and toffee.
