Light chocolate milk head. Deep malt aroma - chocolate - and slight citric quality. Smooth malt flavors. The taste is earthy and gritty, but the mouthfeel is almost creamy and really smooth. This last part confused me: I picked up some esters in the flavor and by the end of the beer I was convinced I was drinking a weissbock. eaglefan538 (2385), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 6, 2006 Poured a dark brown / mahoganey color with a small initial head that didn’t last long and provided only minimal lacing. The aroma was really malty rich, some earthy and breadiness to it, definite detection of alcohol. The flavor was almost disgustingly malty rich, somewhat sweet, but balanced by a choice of a grassy hop (my least favorite touch on a beer: grassiness). Chocolate and caramel malts form the base with alcohol detectable in the flavor too. Lots of malt, thick mouthfeel and flat. Not my ideal doppelbock, but not terrible. Number 3 within style when I rated it, wow. Boutip (2380), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 17, 2004 Bottle: Poured a dark brown color beer with a brownish head with average retention. Aroma is dominated by roasted malts and lack the usual doppelbock banana feel. Taste is a bit deceiving with again the roasted side taking a lot of place and lacking the more sweet/banana and chocolate/coca feels in this beer. A bit disappointed and not even nears the greatness of the Ayinger. BrewDad (2370), Olympia, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 29, 2005 This was a great beer. Very strong in flavor highly carbonated. Great head with a dark brown color. Nice and cloudy just as syle would dictate. Good strong bread aroma no esthers sweet with an awesome flavor. Sigmund (2294), Hafrsfjord, Norway
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 18, 2003 (500 ml. bottle) Depending on the source of light, colour changes from dark brown to dark ruby. Good tan head that doesn't last very long but leaves a good lacing. Moderate aroma of oak, caramel and English pipe tobacco. Well balanced malty flavour with roast notes. Not too sweet. Roast bitterness in the aftertaste, maybe slightly too bitter/tart in the end. All in all a great beer. JohnC (2285), Mission Viejo, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 14, 2002 Nice aroma w/ a slightly sweet finish. This is my first doppelbock. According to the other reviews, this represents the flagship of the style. For me, it was a good beer, but nothing spectacular. I guess dopplebock isn’t my style.
