Label says malt liquor, so guess what I’m envisioning? Well this is the 180 degree opposite of those cheap pale yellow american 40’s found in the bar. Slight overripe fermented grape or crushed raison aroma in wood.. Pours dark but not opaque in my happy steeler stein. Leathery intial hit on the taste buds. Nice palate but could use slightly more carbonation. Licorice finish with a little bitterness but not offensive. Has all the complexities of bitter stouts without the bitterness. That dude on the front looks like he drank a few of the 1 pint 9 oz bottles !

Draught: Poured a dark brown color with a beige head. The aroma is chocolate, nuts, and caramel. Taste is sweet caramel malt with hints of chocolate and nuts. One of the best beers of my weekend at BBF08!

I am generally not a fan of bocks and doublebocks as they tend to have a vegetal element that I find a bit distasteful. This beer had a vegetal element but one that reminded me more of a tasty V8 that I found to be rather pleasant. Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a large brown head. The aroma was sour and tangy molasses with a v8 element underneath. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. The flavor was rich and savor dark malts and molasses. There is again a V8 undertone. The finish is marvelously long. Very nice!

Malty, lightly sweet chocolate, caramel and spice cake aroma. Dark brownish-red in color, appreciable head and effervescence. Flavor possesses a good deal of malt sweetness, with some light smokiness, toffee and raisin. Indulgent, almost creamy mouthfeel, yet the body is not heavy, and it has a very reasonable degree of drinkability. Smooth, malty finish and aftertaste. Good stuff, cheers herb.

Pours very dark ruby with medium brown head. Good retention. Nice fruity caramel malt aroma, with some choc malt and spice present too. Lovely smooth velvet medium mouthfeel. Big sweet toffee and caramel taste, with a balanced bitter finish. Sweet toffee aftertaste, with a hint of raisins? plums? there too. ABV masked perfectly. Very tasty stuff.

a deceptive dark mass reveals a ruby existence when taken from its shady surroundings...a thick warming blanket of tiny brown-seduced spheres covers this morbid concoction and spits forth a stream of toffee tainted air while caramelized nuts, candy bars, charred raspberries, and soapy colored olfactory sensations come to life..an unsyrupy syrup of flavors takes on a salty personalty of nuts, carmel, metal, tobacco, and blanched anise seeds..all this along a semi-full and not so sticky path to the bloodstream.

Bottled. Pours a super deep ruby color. Aroma is sweet. Like chocolate and raspberries. Some roasted coffee as well. Flavor is rich with chocolate and roasted coffee. Some sweet berries and a lingering burnt malty finish. Great brew. I would love to have a case of this stuff.

Tap at Berlin beerfest. Pours deep brown with beige head. Aroma is sweet caramel and grains. Taste is lightly roasted with caramel, light coffee and some dark fruits (cherry/prunes). Well balanced, highly drinkable and the highlight of my tastings at the Berlin beertfets 2008.
