Earthy amd sweet malts dominate, some what nutty, a little roast, some chocolate, and some fruit pokes around. Medium to fuller bodied, nice and mellow, but still coats the mouth. A very nice doppelbock, certainly a treat for malt lovers. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

Smooth, thick, syrupy feel. Very sweet flavour w/ caramel, toffee, peat & licorice. Finish is slightly dry & lightly acidic. SamGamgee (1466), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA

Aroma is sweet bread, toffee, brown sugar, and raisins. Very sweet, malt domination, caramelized sugars and almost no hops, with a thick and slightly sticky body with softer carbonation. It’s a tasty beer, but the sweetness and thickness become somewhat cloying by the end. GreatLibations (1454), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Feb 23, 2008 Pours dark mahogany with a full, lingering froth. Sweet aromas of mildly roasted malts. Medium nectar with mild carbonation. It has an oily texture. Roasted grahm crackers and molases push forward pulling coffee bean and gentle cocoa behind. This is very old world, rustic. The mild sweetness lingers on the finish with a slowly emerging mildly brisk acidity. Good balance and very appealing. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 20, 2005 09.01.01. Ruby with brown streaks and a thin, tan head. Sweet, malty aroma of varied nuts, caramel, brown sugar, some light chocolate, licorice and a touch of warm alcohol. The body is smooth and easy on the tongue, but not as thick or robust as I would have hoped. The flavors have melded well, almost too well, making this seem one-dimensional, as opposed to robust and complex. The sweentess and light roasted character almost completely cancel each other out. The finish is dry and warming. I wasn’t sure what the date on the label translates to (YMD? DMY? MDY?), but my guess is that this beer has been around for a while. I’d love to try a fresh example of this. Perhaps if I’d paid attention at the grocery store over the past couple of years, I might have been able to... robinvboyer (1444), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada

Aroma is super malty, this is like a malt bomb. Bready, and chewy, like a wonderful fresh loaf of bread. THe flavour is a malt explosion, again, very reminiscent of a big fresh chewy loaf of german bready, a wodnerul sipping treat, i love it! asheft (1438), Marburg, Germany
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2004 Almost black, clear orange-red with a yellow beige icing on top. Complex aroma: meaty, salty, noble hops, a little roasty. Flavour was smoky and sweet with a barleywine malt spiciness and an obvious alcohol flavour. A moderate amount of bitterness and roastiness. Full bodied and warming. I enjoyed this beer, but it was after a full meal and this drink is a meal in itself! Gr0ve (1419), Oslo, Norway
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 10, 2007 500 ml bottle. Deep ruby red clear colour. Medium-sized beige fine-laced head with some larger bubbles. Strong distinct rich malty aroma. Toffee and raspberry notes. Hints of chocolate and raisins. Prickly sensation on the tongue. Licorice flavours balanced by smooth hop bitterness and ammonia. Very rich and smooth. Full-bodied, but far from cloying in any way. The soft hop bitterness hides much of the malty sweetness. Very drinkable. A delicious beer.
