Dark toffee color, little head. Aroma: prunes, dates, brown sugar, grapes, fruitcake, chocolate. Taste like chocolate and grapes, wtf? That’s bizarre! Cinnamon muffins! Not that sweet. Bit thin. Bready full finish. Good but not a keeper.

Splendida doppelbock di Weltenburger, uno dei prodotti di punta del birrificio; servita nel bicchiere tozzo, si lascia bere con generosità ma interessa soprattutto le papille gustative e il naso (splendido, di prugna e zucchero candito).

I like how the beer is made in a monastery, but the label features some sketchy aristocrat leering at some object of desire seated beneath his opera box. While I am crazy about German beers, I really do not understand all of the fuss with this one. Basic, good doppelbock. That’s all. Nice appearance, lasting head. Good palate, but no real complexity, in my opinion. I should say that on the label was printed the numbers "09.01.01" Perhaps this sample is four years old. If so, it held up nicely and maybe the complexity was lost over its years in the bottle.

500 ml bottle. From Germany (beerangel.de).
Dark reddish brown colour with big light tan head. Roasted malty aroma with caramel, sugar, nuts, raisins, biscuit, oatmeal and hints of hops. Flavour is slightly more straight forward with roasted malt, burned sugar, alcohol, bitter hops and nuts. Excellent complex brew. I like it!

Black colour with a red tone. Huge off-white head. Sweet, malty, chocolate nose, with hints of toffee. Sweet, malty taste with notes of chocolate and coffee. Slightly sweet, malty finish. Excellent Doppelbock. I love it.

Dark brown color, roasted malty aroma, creamy head creamy lace in my glass, silky mouthfeel, I like.

Extremely malty in the best way, but the cloyingly sweet aftertaste keeps this one from the top of my list.

Brown with a light brown head. Very strong aroma of sweet malts, grain and fermented apples. Flavor is sweet caramel with alchohol notes to balance it out. Again some sweet fermented notes leading to a sleightly bitter grassy finish. Very wellmade, but not my favorite style
