Poured from a bottle purchased in Miami Beach with a fine, tan, foamy, frothy, slightly textured head and some lace. Very dark walnut color with dark amber highlights. Aroma is malty, slight anise and rootbeer. Flavor’s the same but first dry and then sweet. Great body! Silky smooth, fine carbonation and mouth filling. Hints of alcohol. Good finish but maybe too much for a session beer. raymondwave (882), Finland
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 22, 2008 Bottle 0.5 l. Dark brown, thick head. Nose is caramel, malts, liqourice and some coffee. Flavor is spicy, malty with strong liqourice. Smoothly roasted, never too bitter. Very very nice doppelbock. heavy (873), Split, Croatia
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 17, 2009 1/11 A 0.5 l bottle courtesy of Doggythedog and ogivlado, thanks for sharing! It poured reddish brown body with medium sized head. Roasted malt, sugar and biscuit aroma. Fine malty flavor, caramel, biscuit and burnt sugar with some herbal bitterness. Roasted malt occasionally ends to be pleasant. Medium bodied with longer sweetish, even slightly alcoholic finish. Fine beer, but not something extraordinary as a such classic should be. It’s easily forgettable, and also seems quite weak for a doppelbock. mgermani (867), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 19, 2008 Pours a beautiful near-black amber with a thin pale tan head with good retention. Aroma is delicious red apples abd sweet granola. What flavour, though... wow. Wonderful sweet yeast breadiness... I’m really digging that. I’m having a tough time describing the flavours... I can imagine a nuttiness, overripe to rotten fruit (I’m talking brown, mushy peach) and maple-baked beans. Am I crazy? In short, rich dark and velvety. Body is slightly undercarbonated but oh so creamy and delicious. What a tasty, tasty beer. Thank you Robinvboyer for the trade!!! mutant (854), Melbourne, Australia
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 14, 2004 Deep brown with a red tinge not much head. Very sweet, malty and slightly vinuous aroma. Really malty flavour (duh), but also nicely roasted ie. not too much. Not really bitter but has a nice finish with a tongue coating texture. This really is my kind of beer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Oct 5, 2008 Pour is dark brown with a light tan fizzy head. Aroma is malty with sweet butter, brown sugar, and dark fruit. Flavor is sweet roasted malt, light chocolate, biscuits, and goodness. Very smooth carbonation. I also got a bit of toffee characters throughout the brew. Very solid beer. Would buy again. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 13, 2002 all beer should be packaged in bottles this size: perfect for a leisurely tasting. some of the other tasters listed here rattle off a veritable gourmet gift basket of flavors and aromas apparent in this dark ruby doppelbock, and it’s true: it’s a bursting cornucopia: it only lacks a block of cheese and some stone ground mustard. it is malty and cavalry saddle leather and pepsi-cola. i think it’s fabulous, tho my bottle may be a tad elderly ’cause the head was ’diminishing’ before i’d given it leave. it is sweet. drink 3 of these and see lord of the rings and you’ll be speaking elfin too. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 16/20 | Jun 6, 2005 bottle courtesy of radiomgb, pours a deep dark brown with a stiff creamy tand head that floated for a good couple of minutes. nice sweet aroma, roasted chocolate, a bit of licorice. coffee brings up the tail end of the flavor, which otherwise matches the aroma, sweet malts, chocolate and licorice, maybe a little brown sugar as well. body is a little thin, especially when you consider how dark the beer is. flavor is a little unbalanced as well, there is a grassy hop character throughout that isnt blended that well. very tasty, but just a tad off.
