Pronounced cocoa and malt aroma, with vinous, woody and musty undertones. Sweet burnt malt flavours up front, with licorice and caramel and a lactic edge towards the finish. A very rich beer. My only minor quibble is that the mouthfeel gets a bit sticky after a while. Otherwise excellent. 500ml bottle from beersofeurope.co.uk. BBE 22 October 2004.

Pours a dark brown color with a small creamy off-white head that diminished slowly. Good roasted malt and molasses aroma. Medium body with a creamy texture. Heavy sweet roasted flavor and smooth finish of average duration. Very good brew. maeib (4766), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2005 Bottled. A black coloured beer with a purple/red hue and the tiniest of dusty heads. The aroma has plummy fruits, licquorice, roastiness and vinuous alcohol. The taste is initially sweet and jammy then the smokiness, alcohol and a touch of aniseed come through. A very tasty top quality beer. leaparsons (4748), Leicester, Leicestershire, England

A touch of liquorice on the finish completes this great dopplebock. Very good. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA

The pour was hazy deep brownish ruby with a 2-finger khaki head. The aroma was malty, with cacao, some Wheaties, brown sugar, and almonds. Flavors were very malty, cereally, with a lot of grape nuttyness, almonds, some brown sugar, and cacao. Good complexity and balance. ChristianScheffel (4632), Odense, Denmark
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 1, 2009 Dark ruby brown with a firm and lasting tan head. Intense sweet bready malt aroma, with dried fruits, molasses, cognac. Rich and sweet malt and caramel flavour, with darker notes of licorice and dark molasses. It’s sweet, but balanced enough. Sweeter than other doppel tasted recently, nuttier, with more caramalized and more complex notes. Decent body but not what i remembered drinking Asam last fall. Ernest (4501), Boulder, Colorado, USA
