March 2006 Bottle approximately a year old I think. (Dated 010905) Dark brown body, with a small creamy beige head. (3+) Sweet aroma of dark fruit and molasses, with a muted hint of cocoa. Flavour is similarly fruity dark malt with a slight tang to it. Very light notes of anise or sarsparilla (?) in the background are fleeting. I remember it being less tangy and more chocolatey malt sweetness. Medium palate. Quite pleasant. 7/3+/7/4/15 - 3.8<P> January 2004 Bottle. Very dark ruby coloured body is opaque until held up to the light. Aroma is of sweet malt and hints of caramel alcohol. Flavour is beautifully sweet and crosses the tongue with the smoothness of a kiss. Finish has just enough teasing bite to let you know that it carries with it enough alcohol that by the time you finish you will feel at least as good as this tastes. I am now regretting sharing the bottle with someone else. 7/4/8/4/17 - 4.0

Very dark brown color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is chocolate, malt and toffee. A full bodied Dopplebock. Malts are deeply roasted, flavors of chocolate, toffee and dark fruit abound. Hops are very mild, and slightly floral. The maltyness of this beer is the focal point. Very smooth creamy taste. Very soft carbonation. An excellent dopplebock. Very easy drinking. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

The DM & Hotstuff’s European Honeymoon trip beer number 54. This draft brew from the Unionsbrau brauhaus in Munich Germany poured a medium sized head of light brown colored finely sized mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a semi-opaque dark brown colored uncarbonated body. It had a semi-vinous aroma with heavy dark malt notes. The mouth feel was also vinous with dark malt and caramel flavors in a mild vinous finish that also contained a note of licorice. I really enjoyed this one.

This pours with a towering foamy head. As the beer slowly emerges, it’s midnight red. Deep candied fruit aroma, like cooking raisins or something. Deep an rich, this evokes dark cherries, a heavy rich red wine, and a little bit of added brown sugar. Big and strong!

(Bottled, 6.9% ABV, enjoyed straight from the fridge after a 90+ minute walk at -7 C outside) Very dark, reddish brown color. Large, tanned, lasting head. Extremely malty, sweetish and syrupy aroma with hops also present. Very filling, very full-bodied palate with roasted coffee and chocolate in the flavor. Alcohol warms you up nicely, but does not taste at all. Bittersweet, pleasant aftertaste that tickles in your tongue, and sticks into the mouth for quite a long time. An excellent beer for the long winter nights, afterski or whatever. [update Jan 31, 2004] It’s just as good - if not better, at room temperature! Simply the best beer I’ve had so far... [update Mar 4, 2004] Now @ 13,5°C - still one heck of a beer ... this one is pure gold! [update 14 Aug, 2004] although it’s very thick, it’s even refreshing after sauna! [another update Nov 5th, 2005] It’s amazing what one can do with just water, malt and hops! Definitely the best German beer around, and very close to being the best in the world. A true masterpiece in the art of brewing!

Sampled from tap at Kloster Weltenburg Buterscotch and raspberry aroma. Dark chestnut, low creamy white head. Fruity, nutty and roasted notes. Big malted caramel body with a fresh well-lagered fizzing mouthfeel. Nut and fruit aftertaste.
