All of this plays second fiddle to the pure malt flavours one normally would head north to Franconia for, but apparently can find in the monastic brews of Bavaria as Weltenburg and Andechs have proven, especially in their wonderful doppelbocks. herbjones (742), Orange, California, USA

Wonderful candy aroma with a full, rich, sweet body. A dessert beer highly desirable during winter weather. The rich roasted malt candy sweetness is followed by a slight dry, burnt finish. I am not usually an aficionado of sweet beers, but this offering is superlatively crafted. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 13, 2002 all beer should be packaged in bottles this size: perfect for a leisurely tasting. some of the other tasters listed here rattle off a veritable gourmet gift basket of flavors and aromas apparent in this dark ruby doppelbock, and it’s true: it’s a bursting cornucopia: it only lacks a block of cheese and some stone ground mustard. it is malty and cavalry saddle leather and pepsi-cola. i think it’s fabulous, tho my bottle may be a tad elderly ’cause the head was ’diminishing’ before i’d given it leave. it is sweet. drink 3 of these and see lord of the rings and you’ll be speaking elfin too. omhper (12231), Stockholm, Sweden
