| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2002 I celebrated the end of a hellish finals week with this beer...at 10:30 AM. Expected deep mahogany color, creamy tannish head. The aroma is quite earthy, like charred toffee, also dried tinder wood. The malt flavors are terrific, although a bit more subdued than expected. Balanced nearly to perfection by a dry, lightly bitter flourish. I’m afraid that any dopplebock I drink for the rest of my life will have to stand up to Celebrator (unless I find Andescher), and this one doesn’t cut it. Not quite, but not too far off either. Very different in many aspects, and excellent in its own right. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Malty chocolate, dark bread, caramel, and lightly roasty aroma. Smoky, caramel, fruity, light bready flavours with a fruity and lightly roasty finish. Medium to full bodied, but very smooth and easy to drink. Brewmaster (168), USA

A bit thin, medium sweetness. Nice malty aroma. Would have liked just a little more carbonation. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA

A complex sweet array of malt tones - some acidity helps to balance, but this smooth doppelbock is about sweetness, until the finish when it seems to lighten up. badgerben (3610), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Aroma of walnuts and almonds. Chalky body with lots of nuts and sweet malt. Plenty of Noble hops keeps the sweetness balanced out. Very nice. cquiroga (370), Sylmar, California, USA

Pours a dark, bark-colored brown. Dense and creamy head, lingering in a gentle sheath. Lacing is quite good, perhaps a bit fast and not that sticky. Aroma of rich autumnal malt, some dark and pale malts, some shades of fruit, raisins, some wood and a light earthy spice. Rich, earthy matls and dark bread with subtle yeast flavors. Edge of sweetness and a veil of smoke or roast, some apple, a bit of tobacco. I wish it gave a little bit more. Body is very nice, medium-full and gentle, complex but very drinkable. Finish is long and lightly sweet and earthy, very smooth and with subtle dark honey flavors and a touch of acidity. Sort of grows with time after you swallow it-- very good. This beer’s no Celebrator, but it’s pretty damn good-- lighter and more refreshing. Reminds me of early autumn or early spring. Would be great with a roast, or with applewood bacon. Gotta love the doppelbocks with your pork-eatin’ moods. WISEGUY572 (1251), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 28, 2005 Clear and dark, with reddish overtones that become more visible as the amount of beer in the glass diminishes, with a huge coffee colored head that fades and leaves lacing down the side of the glass. Great complexity, with sweet dark roast, coffee and chocolate, bitter hops, and a slightly sour undertown, with a chocolate and bitter finish. Kind of dry tannic mouthfeel and an alcohol warmth. Celebrator is a more striking doppelbock, but this is easier to drink.
