A true classic Doppelbock! great flavors of roasted barley, some hop character on the backside, hints of mollasses and prune but not overly sweet. You can blow through the first glass quickly but remember it IS 7.2%. On draught it is even a bit drier! Prosit!!

500 ml bottle. Deep brown color, creamy tan head. Very appealing sweet aroma with some raisins. Wickedly smooth taste with a chocolaty finish, full body. Great!

Clear dark brown body, with some visible carbonation and a nice frothy light-brown head. Very impressive lacing and decent head retention. Loads of malts in the nose, with bready caramel and dark chocolate notes, and a little smokiness. A touch of floral hops in the background. The taste starts out with loads of caramel, chocolate, and even coffee notes, then going into some strong pleasant breadiness. Some pleasant smokiness develops with time. Very sweet, but appropriate for a doppelbock. Some hints of cherry and honey, together with some nuttiness. The finish is definitely bready and has some roastiness. Medium-to-full body to it. Very smooth, with a nice sweetness and very pleasant roastiness/smokiness. Coats your mouth and leaves you particularly happy. A nice warming sensation appears after a while. The alcohol is pretty well-masked, so it drinks very easily. As the it warms up you will feel it more, but, since the beer is just so delicious, it shouldn’t be an issue. All in all, this might change my perspective on doppelbocks! Great beer!

500 ml bottle in Germany. Weltenburger has been making beer for nearly 1000 years and it shows. Fine dark brown color, smokey aroma, smooth deep malty flavor that lingers. One of the best bock beers of the world. Goes down too easy and will catch up with you if you have many of them. The % is hidden well in the flavor. I don’t give out 4’s often but here is one.

After downing a bottle of Barock Dunkel, I had odds on this being a fantastic Doppel Bock. I really should have placed a bet!!! Poured into a large chalice, a short two-layered dense beige head formed atop a deep, dark ruby red body. Head lasted and left gluggy webs of lace down the glass. Strong, almost concentrated, malty and fruity nose with rich chocolate, plums, light vinous notes and a little liquorice. So thick and treacly in the mouth, very light in carbonation and made more intense by the strong concentrated flavours. Prunes, raisins and sultanas, toffee and toasted malt, and a dry vinous back that blends into a roasted malt swallow that lingers between each slow sip. Quite sweet without becoming cloying, it had a lot of fruit in the mouth once it warmed a little and really belied its almost modest alcohol level. Very strong flavoured, quite smooth and exciting to taste, this was an excellent late night sipping beer. A definitive ’in-your-face’ Doppel Bock that I will certainly taste again.

Deep ruby brown hue with a thin light tan head. Aroma is rich roasted grains, toffee - dark cherries and plums abound. Flavor is a very nice mouthful of raisins, dark cherries, black strap molasses and dark rum. This is a really fine dopplebock, one of the best I have had. Finish is lingering, slightly syrupy.
