Light molassis, metallic aroma, still cold maybe. Taste begins with light sweetness and a mineral, earthy bitterness. Molassis for sure, really nice hops compliment this with a earthy, floral bitterness. Finish is smooth, oily, with hints of cinnamon and toasted malt. Body is straightforward, lightly viscous, slight butteriness. Quite well balanced for what it is, and much less metallic and offensve that most other bottled German offerings that make it over here. johndoughty (2159), cheslyn hay, West Midlands, England

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 16, 2007 A bottle from last year’s release to the LCBO; aroma is woody and heavy with some coffee-ish hints, definitely carrying the sweetness of the malt. The appearance, poured into stem glass, was an opaque brown-black with a decent creamy head. Flavour-wise, the alcohol is well hidden. Instead, one is taken with hints of licorice, apple, and coffee. It’s a good doppelbock, for sure. drjay44 (803), Salida, Colorado, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 21, 2007 Crikey! The head on this thing dangerous; massive rocky texture, coffe coloured. Body is medium chocolate brown in colour. Aromas are forceful with a malty yeasty note, some burnt toffee and mazipan perhaps. A touch challenging. Palate delivers, mostly, the intensity of the nose. Sweet licorice-infused chocolate, thich malts, some fruit cake and heat on th finish. Low fizz. Drinks bigger than its 6.9%. Good. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2005 Handsome brown in color with hints of burgundy. Large, mostly diminishing light tan head with an alluring aroma of deep fruitiness (raisins, plums, overipen fruits), chocolate and coffee grounds. Chewy malty flavor with hints of fruits, caramel and dark malts. A lovely beer. blankboy (3214), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 8, 2005 Bottle. Pours a dark ruby-brown with a huge frothy light-brown head. Looks great! Aroma of caramel malt, vanilla, light hops, sugar and chocolate. The flavour is sweet, roasty and quiet tasty! Some chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla, hops, and more. It gets even better as it warms slighlty. This beer is a very pleasant surprise and one I intend to get again for sure.
