Great aftertaste with long lasting flavor. Great with a thick steak and scalloped potatoes. Not a beer I would drink every day. Only because I drink beers like this with special meals. Pours a deep brown with red hues around the edges, with a taupe head that sadly disappeared too quickly. Aroma of molasses and brown sugar with roasted malts, perfection. Flavour put a smile on my face immediately, an instant classic. Caramel sweetness offset with roasted malts and chocolate, it’s the perfect blend for a bock. Beautiful aftertaste. I can’t praise this one enough, you need to try it. MakeItDrinkIt (66), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 11, 2008 Deep ruby brown hue with a thin light tan head. Aroma is rich roasted grains, toffee - dark cherries and plums abound. Flavor is a very nice mouthful of raisins, dark cherries, black strap molasses and dark rum. This is a really fine dopplebock, one of the best I have had. Finish is lingering, slightly syrupy. Bierkrug (304), Idar-Oberstein, Germany

Weltenburger has been making beer for nearly 1000 years and it shows. Fine dark brown color, smokey aroma, smooth deep malty flavor that lingers. One of the best bock beers of the world. Goes down too easy and will catch up with you if you have many of them. The % is hidden well in the flavor. I don’t give out 4’s often but here is one. I couldn't believe I'd found one of the great beers of the world, but there it is, and without an "-ator" name on it! A very complex and captivating beastie. Looks almost like a stout, though I can see the brownish head from the underside. Big aroma of molasses, malt, and... blueberries, it seems, or maybe canteloupe. Taste has an up front bitterness that calls a stout to mind again, but then is replaced by roasted malt sweetness, lager yeast, woodiness and another fruit overtone. Finally, there's a smooth alcohol finish like a scotch and soda. Just incredibly pleasing all the way through. deprogram (112), Renton, Washington, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 18, 2004 16.9 oz bottle Ruby-red in the glass, with an energetic and consistent head. The aroma is clover-sweet, and floral, with tinges of the burning malt. Sugary flavor, of course, and an almost syrupy feel, but balanced with enough prickling bitterness not to cloy. A most warming beer - at about 50F, in a nice wide glass - on this vicious winter day.
