Body is medium chocolate brown in colour. Aromas are forceful with a malty yeasty note, some burnt toffee and mazipan perhaps. A touch challenging. Palate delivers, mostly, the intensity of the nose. Sweet licorice-infused chocolate, thich malts, some fruit cake and heat on th finish. Low fizz. Drinks bigger than its 6.9%. Good. barleyPops (1079), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA

great looking pour to this one. dark brown with a ruby edge and a decent size khaki head. aroma was outstanding of sweet caramel, plums, raisin, hints of dark chocolate and coffee, my anticipation is high. medium to almost full bodied the flavors were more of the sweet caramel, plums, etc., and while good there was just a little strange bitterness that did not match the aroma profile. still a very good doppel and one I hope to have again. Clear, dark red mahogany body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Sweet raisin malt flavour, particular emphasis on the sweet. Medium-full body. Nice to try finally (after a bit of a muddle, oops), drinkable, but overly sugary. bonbright7 (173), Bellport, New York, USA

It took me a while to pick up on the nuances. This was a good beer that would probably better on tap. RaphaelN (195), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Aroma was very malty with a small bit of roast. Mouthfeel was thick with caramel, malt and a sweet bitter taste. A fairly good beer. I liked it. VeloVampire (490), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 21, 2008 500 ml bottle - pours a dark chestnut hue with slight reddishness at the edges and a thick, creamy two-finger head that laces the glass elegantly. Fresh dark rye bread aroma, along with lots of sweet malt, molasses. Very full-bodied and rich, lots of complexity - dark rye, bready yeastiness, some very slight fruitiness, hazelnut, capped off with a bitter finish. Not my favourite style of beer, but I can appreciate the quality here.
