Not a big fan of this one. cgreb (173), Marburg, Germany Mar 26, 2009 bottle - hazy dark brown beer with thick beige head. Aroma is yeasty. Flavour is malty with some yeast and butter. Caramel and coffee with hints of fruits like cherry. Late bitterness. bradlyc77 (226), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 23, 2009 11.2 oz bottle pours a red/copper with 1 finger tan head. Aroma is yeast and bread. Taste is caramel, dark fruit, spice/phenolic, some honey, and earthy notes. Nice moderate hops bitterness that lingers through the slightly dry finish. A well made dubbel. gogaterz (20), Pennsylvania, USA Mar 23, 2009 Dark brown with a reddish hue. Has a foamy cream colored head. The aroma is very complex with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and and dates. The flavor almost matches the aroma perfedtly with the hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and dates. The alcohol rounding out the flavor and ties everything together. The finish brings out some sweetness like cream in coffee or milk chocolate mixed with the dark chocolate. A very drinkable beer and probably my favorite of the Trappist Ales. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 22, 2009 11.2 oz bottle poured into a goblet. Opaque brownish copper color with a light tan head that leaves fine Belgian lacing. Aroma is hearty with sweet bready malts, heaps of fleshy fruit, raisins, and peppery alcohol. Flavor contains a toffee maltiness as a basis for all the light and dark fruits and spices to accent. Medium-full body with very fine carbonation. At first it’s overcarbonated but with a little time it settles down. A very good dubbel. smashteroid (227), USA Mar 19, 2009 First abbey I’ve ever tried, so I might not have the correct vocab to describe it. Served cold from bottle. Pours brown with a light off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, yeast and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is very floral, some bitterness and malt sweetness. Great carbonation. Good, full body. I quite enjoyed this, and look forward to trying the tripel next. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 18, 2009 Bottle shared at tasting. Thanks! Pours chocolate brown with a light tan head. Smell is raisin. Taste is thin, and bland raisins. Tart dark raisin like fruitiness and a touch of burnt bitterness as well. Medium to thin body and normal carbonation. davegore (200), liverpool, Merseyside, England Mar 18, 2009 Bottle from Legendary Lancashire Heroes, pours a dark brown, malty and a quite sharp taste in the mouth
