Cavie (1300), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Mar 4, 2009 Very tasty indeed! This beer had the right mix of what I was looking for. soccer290 (135), Highland Park, Illinois, USA Mar 3, 2009 12 oz bottle. Another trappist brewery added to my selection, very excited for it. Pours a dark brown with a light tan head that is about a finger high. Amazed at how long the head stays (though part of it might be because I poured it into the wrong glass by mistake), and how full bodied the head is. Smells of dried apricot, raisins, and other dried dark fruit. Reminds me a lot of Chimay Red’s smell. Tastes of raisin, caramel, yeast, and dried fruit. Goes down with a bit of a carbonation bite, but I love that. Overall very good. f351c4v (404), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2009 Third hit on the wayback machine. Pours a clody, dark brown with a nice tan head. Fantastic, sweet caramel aroma, a hint of breadiness. Again, sweet body, dark fruits, raisins, biting, yeasty finish. Definitely a great choice, just not on par with the Rochefort or Westy. Gary (352), Buckinghamshire, England Mar 1, 2009 Good slice of dark mallt.Bunch of boozy breadiness.spice and banana esters .Lacking base or body.Nice flavas though. GJF (480), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA Mar 1, 2009 Pours a very murky reddish brown with lots of yeast floating in it. Small tan head. Flavor starts out incredibly rich and chocolatey and finishes up with just a touch of sourness then a fairly dry, hoppy finish. Quite nice. BiddleBrau (303), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Mar 1, 2009 11.2 oz bottle at East Side B. Café in NYC - Pours a hazy brown with thin white head. Caramel malt aroma. Sharp hop bite up front with rich malt finish. Not much of an after taste. Low esters. Having had this brew in the café outside the abbey years ago, I was looking forward to having this again. This bottle had a lot to live up to. Sadly it could not compete against that chalice in Westmalle. donfardz64 (406), Wellington, New Zealand Feb 25, 2009 750mL bottle from Regional. Pours cloudy brown with a tan head. The head dissipates fully which is disappointing.
Aroma is quite ’dark’ with dark fruits, caramel and slight spices.
Taste is full of prune & raisin notes. Roast malt shows through and spices, caramel come with it. Medium bitterness, dry finish. Very nice. hayduke (1616), Eureka, California, USA Feb 25, 2009 Poured a cloudy golden brown with a very fat long-lasting off-white head and good lacing rings. Nose of malts, flowers, citrus, and fruits. Very smooth and rich mouthteel. Flavora are complex with ripe fruit dominating.. Good dry finiish, Nice lookng, nice smell, nice palate, nice flavors, and a nice finish. A really good beer.
