It poured out a normal head, not too huge, and with little scent. The taste starts with a sweet appearance, then bitters come in and accompany this fine dubbel.It has tasty but slightly too little bitter after tones. It has hints of caramel and cinnamon. These could have been a bit more pronounced, to allow us more than a educated guess of what it is that we taste here. The head is a nice tan froth which keeps 1/4-inch retention down the glass, leaving soapy lace. Some toasty caramel and aerated sugars to the nose. The flavors are dry, of roasted caramel balancing nicely with sour fruity hues. The finish closes cleanly, with hints of roasted light bitters. The mouthfeel is thick, although a bit overcarbonated, with light alcohol notes to pepper the back-palate. Somewhat simplistic in nature, this brew is a nice offering on the Trappist Dubbel style. TearsforBeers (171), Ohio, USA Jan 17, 2009 Pours cloudy reddish brown amber. The aroma is very sweet, of molasses and caramel, with notes of toasted malts, and almond. The flavor is about like the smell, though a bit less sweet than expected, and has a nice lightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thinner than expected for a beer this sweet. Overall, this is an enjoyable beer that’s not as complex as other Trappist beers. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA Jan 16, 2009 Comes out of the bottle a dark, hazy, chocolaty brown with a fairly thick beige head. (Be careful - it foams like all-get-out!) Strong aroma has a fruity overtone and an appreciable malty component with hints of caramel. Satisfying flavor is malty with a strong apple/pear tone and hints of caramel and smoke, and a hoppy undertone. Finish is subtly bitter and has a touch of sweetness. One of my favorite Belgians. The Westmalle line of beers in my opinion are the best of the trappist. The dubbel is the best of the Westmalle. A must try beer...don’t buy just one...you will want more.
