mixos (50), Greece Sep 7, 2009 I prefer this one than the tripel one from Westmalle. Dark brown-red, almost hazy color. Nice head that dissapears quickly. Nose of malts, dark fruits, caramel and chocolate. Taste is malty with hints of coffee, caramel, fruits. Hoppy long lasting finish.Nice carbonation, nice palate. Well balanced. Narnad (681), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Sep 5, 2009 Best by date was 8/22/09 Pours a dark brown with a slight haze to it, moderate chunks and a big tan, foamy head that is very dense. Aroma had a mildly sweet caramel malt note, some dark fig fruitiness, light funky note from yeast, some chocolate in there as well. Flavor has a semi-sweet figgy and chocolate note, some spiciness from hops while the yeast adds a funky background note and finishes with a dry feeling. Density was a bit watery feeling, very high carbonation and the head retention was great. Overall a solid brew but not as good as I had thought given the rating. Prefer some of the other trappist ales out there to this one and it may need to be tried again fresher. rlaw (42), USA Sep 2, 2009 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown -- even a bit reddish. A bit of sediment at the bottom. Thin head disappeared fairly quickly. Aroma is pleasant: some sweetness, dark fruits. Flavor is lively and complex, but very drinkable: candy sugar sweetness, with some dark fruit (a little figgy?), soy sauce, a bit of yeasty sourness, and a touch of hoppiness. Ends pretty dry. arrogantb (695), Denver, Colorado, USA Sep 1, 2009 12 oz. bottle marked 07/02/08, I have no idea how old it is. Appearance is a dark-reddish brown with a small head that sticks around pretty well but is not more than a centimeter high. The smell of this beer reminded me of grapes and red wine and me anticipate the taste even though I don’t drink wine…. The taste is delicious but doesn’t quite match up with the smell but that is ok. It is also thick and hard to describe. It’s dark and fruity but not really spicy at all, maybe some nuttiness. Good bubbly carbonation and very easy to drink, this is a nice beer. Both beers I have had so far from Westmalle have been delicious but I enjoyed this more than the tripel and I wish I had bought more than one.

Rochefort and Chimay are my fave Trappists but this Trappist brewery comes 3rd McGarnigle (302), Rochester, New York, USA Aug 31, 2009 11.2 oz drink by 26/02/10. Dark, thick looking, but reveals some orange tinge when held to the light. Smells of liqueur. The head fizzed away faster than I’d thought. Standard dubbel flavors (dark fruits, chocolate cake...), but a little roastier than others. Body has plentiful but soft carbonation, and feels light for its size (that Belgian magic). rlxx (5), Belgium does not count Aug 29, 2009 Verry plezant dubbel trappist that’s easy to drink, mostly i drink this over a good diner, buth she taste as good on a sunny terras! satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 26, 2009 nose is yeast, candy sugar and stone fruits. dynamics of sweetness and bitterness in the aroma alone is staggering. appearance is nearly entirely opaque chestnut brown. flavor is a burst of counterpoints....hop bitterness makes the tongue sizzle but sharp candy sweetness as well as dark molasses all make appearances. the end however is ironically and largely dry, and all the amazement ceases relatively quickly. the palate is really what can take this to its upmost heights as a king amongst princes or down to simply a duke or earl. in the best bottles ive had the carb is large and it translates. in others the carb appears lively but the palate remains a touch dead. in its long travels the yeast can perform some interesting acts, to the delight of the drinkers palate or his dismay.
