tunneler (112), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 20, 2008 dark fruity nose with subdued yeast. sweet taste and dry finish. Just in case anyone makes the same mistake: make sure to let this warm up properly before drinking it’s worlds different and much better at the proper temp (same can be said for all the Trappist beers) Edmoe (126), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 19, 2008 Opaque brown with slight head; some lacing. Aroma is a very pleasant malty sweetness. Flavor is a little less than expected. It was good but I wanted more of it. Subtle malt flavor; finished a little dry. Palate a little thin. Not unpleasant at all. I just wanted more. coldbrewky (716), Saugerties, New York, USA Jan 19, 2008 Bottle: Pours a silty brown with a bit of light let thru at the edges of the glass. A frothy tand oily head gives way to thicker rings alongside the rim of the glass and covers 3/4 over the beer. Nose of sweet cherries with some whisps of oak. Tounge is enveloped with velvet of gentle malts and hops that build to a stong tinglyness of fruit..mostly cherries but a whip or two of ripe mellons. Taken over then by the superb chalky chocolate/pale malt mixture thata lso has hints of nuts and earth. Good medium finish speaks of patience and confidence. yespr (11645), Copenhagen O, Denmark Jan 19, 2008 33 cL bottle. Pours murky brown with a lacing tan head. Aroma is light fruity, subdued malt and with a distinct dough yeasty note. Flavour is smoothly balanced between caramel malt, fruit notes. chocolate and a mild mellow yeast note. Ends with a lingering fruity and mild bitter finish. Solid dubbel, but in my book the weakest style made by the trappist brewers. This one is quite reminiscent of the Westvleteren Dubbel. robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Jan 18, 2008 pour is brown with red tint, bubbly beige head.
smell is of dark fruit, sour, caramel, sweet cocoa.
taste is tart red grapes, prunes, raisins, caramel, a little chocolate in the back, nicely bitter ending. milljam (562), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Jan 18, 2008 Did not really enjoy nearly as much as I thought that I would. Its quite possible that I happened to have abad bottle, but I thought it was overly bitter and flat....with not much distinguished in the aroma or palate, other than the bitterness and overwhelming flatness. But as I said..maybe I had a bad bottle. Will have to try again at some point. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Jan 15, 2008 Bottle. Sweet nutty and malty aroma, light lemongrass and fruity candy notes, really diverse and attractive. Several different kinds of candy, indeed. Deep ruby-mahogany pour with a soapy light brown head. Crisp taste, bone dry and yeasty with soft maltiness and increasingly hoppy hoppiness. Very dry end is nutty, [regular-] grassy, and complex. Balanced and smooth. Darkly, portentiously fruity with a medium-full body. Superb dubbel - its hop profile is to be envied by just about everyone, everywhere. [May be the best dubbel I’ve had, I need to get my hands on some more Binchoise] joekfsu (138), Boardman, Ohio, USA Jan 15, 2008 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a murky, non-translucent brown with a massive tan head that is mostly diminishing. Aroma of dark fruit, mostly raisin, some yeast and alcohol. Initial flavor of apple and grape with more dark fruits coming in later. Light body, moderate carbonation, slight alcohol presence, and some lacing. Ok beer, worth a try.
