cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 13, 2007 Deep brown with nice head and lacing on the glass. A direct beer, with hidden complexity and it reveals itself slowly as the glass empties. A figgy, malty scent emits from the beer as well as tobacco, suagry, caramel aromas and flavors. Subtle, smokey, fruity roasted notes make themselves known throughout the session. Nice beer. mcbackus (724), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Aug 13, 2007 bottle pours a dark chocolate brown with a small tan head. initioal aroma of sugary toffee malts, light aroma of dark fuits and what seems like vanilla. nothing to overpowering in this. flavour is spicey (peppery), dark sugars that are slightly burnt, and some toffee malts. finishes very smooth. teebradford (46), Senatobia, Mississippi, USA Aug 13, 2007 Flying Saucier-Memphis. My first perfect rating. Wow. Also, my first genuine trappist ale. It came out with a special glass. Just pouring the beer and watching the fluffy head slowly dissipate was a treat in itself. Gorgeous dark color. Magical aroma: Fig, plum, raisin. Some other stuff I don’t know how to label. First sip: Heaven. Very complex with more fruit and molasses. You’d never know this was 7% alcohol. You don’t even notice it. The flavor changes slightly on the back end. Comes off a little dry. My nose burned slightly. After I swallowed, my stomach felt warm. Just a great, great brew. Save for special occasions. This stuff is expensive. $10 a bottle! DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 11, 2007 Some caramelly dark sugar, hint dark dried fruit, and rounded-off hop flavour. Medium palate, warming and a touch sweet but still not cloying - refreshing beer for a Dubbel. Can’t describe aroma - it is all fine subtle complexity. Finishes fairly clean, highly drinkable for 2-3 servings. IndianaRed (1553), Boise, Idaho, USA Aug 10, 2007 Bottle pours a slightly hazy deep brown with slight redish hints. Small but persistant light tan head and thick sheeting lacing. Nice woody brown sugar and dark pitted fruits in the aroma. Flavor is not so interesting. Light typical belgian yeast notes and soft woody blanket of flavors. Quite hightly carbonated which seems to blast away some of the subtle flavors. Still nice.
Light fizzy palatte. Kirill (264), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 6, 2007 i actually like this better than the tripel, much more deep and extensive taste, with a variety of small subflavors in the finish, from your typical malts, hops, and fruits to more fancy things like caramel Rotorhead87 (117), Temple, Texas, USA Aug 5, 2007 Excellent beer, but not knock-your-socks-off good like some other trappists. Its also not nearly as complex as some, just a simple, really good beer. Has a nice malty nose and flavor that lingers on the pallate. Much better than the trippel, in my opinion.
The only other time I’ve had this was in Brugge, and I think it was even better there (as expected.) b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Aug 4, 2007 Dark brown olor with medium diminishing head and some lacing. Nice rich malty aroma and flavor. Better than the tripel as there is less alcohol flavor
