glennmastrange (805), hobe sound, Florida, USA Jul 5, 2007 Bottle. Moderate notes of milk chocolate, leather, and really no noticable hop smell. The background has raisin and vanilla in it as well. It has an off white fizzy head that’s mostly diminishing with not much lacing. Color is a murky brown/black. Taste starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic and finishes tart, bitter and a bit acetic. Palate is between med/light and medium and the texture feels oily to start and ends quite dry. Carbonation is fizzy and it has a fair amount of alcohol in the finish. A very tasty Abbey. estoves2 (98), Sweden Jul 2, 2007 Dark ruby red body with thick thoaty brown head that lasts the entire beer. Aroma is of dried fruit like plums and little yeast and alcohol. Flavor is fruity of plums and some notes of banana. Little yeasty. Spicy clovelike hops. Small bitternes in the finish. Palate is mediumthick and creamy. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2007 Pours a dark brown with reddish hues. Deep maroon, with a small, but well retained light tan head. Lots od dark fruits, dark malts, and candy sugar in the aroma. Very sweet smelling. The taste is big and bold, really sweet and fruity. Dark berries, malts, other dark fruits, some candy sugar, and a slight bitterness in the finish. Seems to be aloit going on here. The aftertaste has a hint of alcohol, but fruity on the palate. Nice brew. Good representation of this style in my opinion. smhncabot (310), Cabot, Arkansas, USA Jun 30, 2007 pours mahogany with minimal off-white head. aroma is a little funky with a lot of overripe fruit and some toffee and caramel sweetness. taste is fruity with ripe fruit and berry. there is a good amount of toffee and caramel sweetness with slight tangy and roast bitterness in the finish. pretty solid. Allen (1282), Switzerland Jun 29, 2007 Updated: May 23, 2009Bottled 33cl. It pours a beautiful deep amber beer with a thick, rather big remaining tanned head. Outstanding flowery aromas of ripe fruits including berries, melon, banana and peaches. Wonderful hints of wild strawberries. Some toffee and licorice in the nose. Very sweet and slightly smoky. Some woody, madeira-like elements. The flavor is very rich and sweet with reminiscent woody characteristics. Rather vinous. This beer has a pleasant bitterness. A very well balanced dubbel with a sharp and spicy taste. Lots of caramel with hints of black chocolate. The finish is bitter with some dark chocolate that comes through.. I was impressed by this dubbel! Additional comment: An excellent trappist - slightly sour. Woody and vinous. Some candied fruits showing up. Unique. Third rerate: Excellent. Huge amonts of aniseed, chocolate, pineapple, homemade caramel, candy and sage showing up in both aroma and flavor. Good bitterness. Absolutely fantastic. After several sampings: Mango does come to mind in the taste especially. carl4beer (391), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Jun 26, 2007 pours dark brown and a bit hazey. aroma is a bit sweet and tart with malt and some raison. mouthful is rich and and a smooth with great fig/raison and some caramel. finishes crisply. very nice... Wobbler (46), Ireland Jun 23, 2007 Darkish brown with a touch of red, bit of a head which doesn’t last too long. The beer smells like chocolate and maybe some dried fruit. Very complex taste. One of the best dubbels I’ve tasted. TheGrandMaster (1845), Auckland, New Zealand Jun 21, 2007 Bottle, pours black with a slight reddishness and a great foamy beige head (I liked the bottle as well). A fruity malt aroma with caramal and raisins and then a whiff of alcohol. Not as heavy or sweet as I was expecting. Light and malty at first, but then a much stronger sourness comes through and alcohol fills the mouth and the nostrils. There are some rich fruity flavours there, but it is the complex nature of the palate that carries me away. Damn good, can’t wait to taste the Tripel....
