(bottle - 330 ml) Dark brown color with a mound of tan foam. Aroma is light and slightly fruity with some dark malts and some very light spice. Flavor is sweet and lightly spiced at the beginning with a hint of raisins, chocolate, and yeast. Alcohol is warming at the end with a very bubbly mouthfeel.

Classic belgian dubble. Dark brown - malty and caramel but also a little fruity and sweet. All in all very good.

Draught. I don’t know why it took me so long to try this, but anyway. Rich caramel-brown with a frothy tannish head and lace. Aroma has lots of dark chocolate malts - sugar candy and bread. Flavour is rich in malts - predominately caramel smoothness. It’s pretty underwhelming I think, especially when compared overall to the Tripel.

Dark brown with hints of red in my chalice with a small beige foam for a head. Candied fruit nose. Best before date of 9-5-08, but I don’t know what that means wrt the age of this bottle. I had an older bottle not long ago and I think I prefer it younger. Lots of bubbles on the tongue. Fruity with lots of grape, berry, raisen and fig newton. There is an everpresent bright sugar sweetness to it that is tempered somewhat by the yeast.Very nice trappist ale.

1996 vintage bottle. Tasted this beer with Maibockaddict. Reddish orange in color, with lots of floaties. Sharp, fruity aroma. Full bodied beer. Well aged bottle, and it was wonderful. Maibockaddict and I also had a newer version of this beer, a 2003 version. More fresh aroma. Raisiny flavor, not as aged as the first one 8 years. It ages very well and its worth the money.

11.2 oz bottle: Soft body, a malty and chocolatey flavor and some fruit as well. Rather dry at the end with spicy hop notes. Nice.

Dense, mostly lasting khaki head over an unclear chestnut-brown body. Nice lacework. Sweet malty aroma with a little fruit to it. Candysugar and sweet dark malt flavors. Lots of dark fruits too; raisins, prunes and plums. Modest hopbitterness. A bit cloying mouthfeel. Inviting and well made, but a bit too sweet for my tastebuds.

Oh my God, nearly a perfect beer. Its a perfect balance of fruity malt flavors and a firm and pleasant hop base. Lightly dry. The malt/hop balance is as noticeable in the aroma as it is in the flavor. Dark ruby-red tinted brown. <P> Years later, an update, and how interesting how things have stayed the same: my main note from the new fresh tasting is that this beer is exquisitely balanced. The sweetish almost nutty malt flavors mingle with a lightly hopped dry finish, all the while swimming with the lightest phenols (banana) and no alcohol presence whatsoever. Maybe its not distinctive, but its a great beer that does not draw attention to itself. I'm lowering my numbers from 4.8 only because I think the original score was a tad too high, not because my opinion of it has dropped.
