Subsequent tastes were a little more subdued possibly due to the Little Debbie Nutty Bar I was eating. Quite complex. A nice caramel nose, bubbly. Quite good. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 21, 2005 Moderately hazy with a deep ruby-brown color and a perfectly dense, foamy, 1/2" tan head. Light chocolate confectionary powder leads the aroma, also factoring in pepper, copper, sodden leaves and a blunt cinnamon-nutmeg combo. Sleek introduction to the palate. A chocolate muffin motif counterbalances an overall arid mouth feel. Nutty, chocolatey tobacco accents. Complexities arrive late to the scene and are somewhat depleted, but it’s good that they made the effort of being present. Tree bark curtails on the backend. Innocuously creamy, dry and twang infested. Lacks the body and substance I hoped it would showcase. Some subliminal balancing forces are at work here, and complaints aren’t harbored against that particular direction of this Trappist ale. Finishes with a stainless steel semblance met with mild cocoa powder. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA

Aroma is malt dominated with notes of darker fruits, yeast, caramel and spices. Flavor is the same, and it’s not a monster like some of the other trappists, but it’s certainly well done. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 7, 2008 Mahogany color with a viscous 1" head. Nice earthy smell of dark pit fruits. Decent taste same as smell is malty sweet up front with a fairly dry finish. This beer tastes better at 60-65*f than when chilled. The yeasty crud at the bottom of the bottle had a good flavor of ripe plums. 013006 Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

Aroma is chocolate and raisins. Slight alcohol taste followed by some chocolate covered raisins and caramel. Fairly crisp taste and not alot of sweetness. All hail the trappist monks! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 5, 2004 Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Birmingham. Very dark brown, with a beige head. Oat and berry aroma, thick and ominous. Sweet, fruity taste, firm, full-bodied. Alcohol creeps in on the finish, before relaxing back to a sweet, malty flavour. Thick in the mouth, complex and balanced. Bubbly on the tongue. Superb beer, which has everything. Kevin (1918), Colorado, USA
