Westvleteren Blond is the basic beer for the monks’ own consumption, since 1999, when the former 6° dark ale (red cap) was finally discarded, after the 4° had already gone that path.

bottle and glass thanks to xnoxhatex. Muchos gracias for this gem. murky pale yellow with healthy white head. slightly soured wheat, grass, faint lemon and muscat on the nose. Nose seems a little understated. Flavor is surprisingly herbal and spicey. Mint, sage, grass, alfalfa, touch of underlying sweetness to balance a bit. Wonderfully bitter hops mingle with sharp bubbles to excite the palate. Ends slightly dry and bitter with a slight resinous coating on the tongue. So unique and wonderful.

Bottle at Haket 2008-02-08. Clear amber with a light head. Just as westy 8 this one reminds me of apple cider. Fruits (red apples is what comes to my mind) in aroma. Taste is malty and some fruit. Dry mouthfeel.

33cl bottle from the monastary. Pours a hazy head with about a finger-height of white foam that lasts the entire session and a golden color. Aroma is spicy. Notes of apples, clove, grass and hops. Flavour is a bit wheaty and bitter. Notes of apples, spices and yeast. It has a lingering aftertaste. A very nice beer for the summer evenings.

A big thanks goes out to leftmindedrighty for this opportunity to sample such a fine brew The classic Westvleteren bottle poured into my chalice produced a good fingers worth of white fluffy head that turns into a thick lace that last till the end. The body on it is a hazy (I swirled the yeast) apricot color with fine yeast particles floating through out The aromas of bananas, yeast, grass and hops come through wonderfully. There is also some spice to it cloves and pepper Flavors of yeast and pepper, along with its almost earthiness of the other spices hit me first. Then other flavors, sweetness of fruit and a dryness of some hops in the end. Yes complex is a good word for this beer. Light and smooth mouthfeel with a light crispness due to the carbonation would sum this up Now let me say it is very drinkable. And I love to have it again . Due to its rarity and price I don’t think I’ll be having many more though. If I lived in close to the monastery it would be a great session beer. So I guess I’ll stick with my Orval the next time I need a fix Thanks again Aaron

[rated 3.10.08] Thanks xnoxhatex for the brew and the glass! Pours cloudy golden with some large bubbles and a frothy white small head. Strong fruit and yeast aroma. Sweet yeasty and slightly apple flavor, with some grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Really smooth and clean. The malt is almost candy like. Very smooth fluffy body. I like it a lot better than Orval. 8.4.9.5.18 [wow I can’t believe I really wrote that last statement hahaha] [rated from the cafe in March 2009, and again 10.6..09] Aroma is super ’plumy’ Westveleteren distinctive yeast, sweet and crisp, lemon, noble hops, wonderful. Flavor and body follows, super crisp and flavorful, a delight. The yeast is absolutely unmistakable and ever remarkable.

A candy sweet, fruit nose, banana, peppery yeast, grass notes. Flavor is fruity, bready. Also a lot of organic hoppy bitterness than I was expecting. A nice surprise considering its a blonde. A dry finish lingers on the back of the tongue. A very good Belgian, and very refreshing. A hot summer day would make this.
