Commercial Description:
Westvleteren Blond is the basic beer for the monks’ own consumption, since 1999, when the former 6° dark ale (red cap) was finally discarded, after the 4° had already gone that path.

Pale yellow color. Excellent fruitiness, (pineapple, pear) blended with yeastiness. Just a hint of spice and herbal bitterness on the finish.

Body is foggy gold, with a thin white head. Aroma is of heavy pale malts, pineapple, apple, grapefuit. Taste has a light hoppiness which is initially followed by grapefruit and light hops.

33cl bottle from henrikb, dated 1.03.05. Pours a pale yellow until I poured the yeast in, and now it’s a cloudy light brownish yellow. The head is tight, two fingered, and white. Looks like it will be staying the duration. Aroma of cork, powdered sugar, yeast, apricots, pear, a bit of spices and dust. The flavor is much the same, though doesn’t seem quite as good--flavors here seem muted. There is some lemon and a bit of tart acidity (though the two don’t seem related) and a dry lightly bitter finish. Moderate carbonation, light to medium bodied. Henrik gave me all three of the Westvleterens, and starting with this one I’m fairly excited about the others as well.

Pours a pale lemony yellow w/o the yeast. Turns more tawny yellow after yeast is poured from the bottled. Medium sized snow white, semi creamy froth that reduces at a moderate pace leaving full brewers lace and a full dusty canopy. Not much aroma at all when cold but as she warms it really opens up. Aromas of freshly squeezed citrus and crushed walnuts with the shell. Very interesting indeed. Light nectar w/ ample residual effers. The texture is soft yet fiberous like a cotton ball. Flavors are totally dry w/ delicate nuances of a French Champagne nature. A nice acid componant w/ bright citrus rind and yeast. Weaved in the mix are complexities consisting of walnuts, muscat, honeydew rind, and a pinch of spicey clove. The finish is bittered from the stone fruit spectrum. Overall: This is a complex brew that drinks better warm. Very complex indeed. Because of it’s Champagne flavor profile I bet it tastes great w/ a bowl of strawberries. If you love Champagne, you gotta try this brew. Connoisseurs choice!

Bottle; Nose of yeasty breadiness, with light apple, clove, an caramel notes; light but complex aroma, not jumping out at you like the big beers, but there; hazy golden with a big frothy, long-lasting, glass-lacing white head; flavor intially of peppery, spicy, hop bitterness, the hops lasting into a long finish!

What a nice surprise. Both to be given this as a christmas gift and the beer itself. Pale and slightly murky looking with a nice white head. Very nice and complex aroma, dominated by light yeasts (I really don’t know how to describe it), some spicyness and a bit of hops. Very flavourful for the type (blond), coriander, lovely and quite characteristic yeast flavour with a good balance btw. sweet and bitter notes. Impressive if the alc. content is correct - it does taste of quite a lot more.
