Lives up to its name-this beer is black. Pours to a bubbly brown head that quickly dissipates to a blanket that covers until beer is gone. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, metal. Overly sweet for me--I like my porters on the dry side. Subtle bitterness enhances. Smooth, creamy aftertaste. If there was a rating for packaging, I’d give it max--the label is cool and fun.

An ok brew, several samples courtesy of Mystery swap 2.0. Some chocolate, roasted malts, abit watery, but very drinkable, no notice of the 7% alcohol. Some lingering aftertaste, Very decent, nothing wrong with it!

not a fan. I had this beer a few weeks ago and was un- impressed. It was dark and it was sweet but....not a good porter in my book

Nice, heady pour with a thick-ish dark flavorful head. Beer dark in color and flavor as well. While I find the aroma minimal, the beer has some wonderful chocolate, cofee, and malty notes as others have mentioned. Very very drinkable, dark but not too heavy or bitter. A hint of a sort of espresso aftertaste.

Deep black in colour, completely opaque with a thinnish brown head. Nice look! Aroma of chocolate, coffee and roasted malt - good as well. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour coupled with a bit of a lactic taste and quite a bit of chocolate very noticeable. Aftertaste shows more of a mellow characteristic with coffee and roasted malt the strongest and a bit of sugar towards the end also noticeable. Overall, a very good beer - perfect and full, even for the summertime! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased directly from Weyerbacher in Easton, Pennsylvania on 26-May-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Poured brown with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate and roast. Flavors of astringent chocolate, light roast, and dark fruit. Decent, but nothing too remarkable.

Since that Weyer Old Heathen was so good I was expecting something positive from this. Pours very dark almost black but not really opaque. The bottle label is an interesting read, yes the speed of an electromagnetic wave is 186,000 miles per second or 300,000,000 meters per second. Try driving that fast on yer Harley. I don’t know why Saturn is not being dragged into the hole. When you pop the lid of this 12 oz brown bottle there is initially no smell. But when you pour it into the glass it develops a mild strongish roasty aroma that is difficult to describe. The first taste is that of a strong or Baltic porter, more burnt bitterness than I am used to. Decent carbonation, a medium effect that is welcome. Comes on almost like an imperial stout. Yuengling’s black & tan has many more manners than this. Finish is medium length lingering burnt malty bitterness that holds on the back of your throat for a while. Rates right down there with Yards General Washington Tavern Porter, Arcadia London Porter, Saranac Caramel Porter and JW Dundees Porter. Not as good as Bell’s porter and Otter Creek.
