Weyerbacher Blasphemy

22oz bottle: Pours a crystal clear medium to dark red color with smallish creamy light tan head. Aroma has notes of vanilla, burbon, oak, cherry, toasted caramel, mild belgain esters. Flavor is malty, loaded with caramel, notable hints of burbon and charred oak, bit of cherry and vanilla. Finish is mildly sweet, hint of alcohol.

Bottle. Bright red-copper with a creamy yellow-white head. Aroma of oak, fruit (melon, orange), and cereal grain. Fruit flavour consisting of pineapple and apricots, some raisiny wood, and harsh alcohol. There are some nice flavours but the alcohol and wood just seem to overpower it.

Cloudy dark amber-brown body with a small frothy off-white head. Sweet malty aroma with some sugary fruit and a bit of oak. Sweet fruit and caramel flavor with a touch of oak.

Bomber from JCB. Big rush of yeast upon opening. Loads of fruit in the nose, dark and plummy with red berry. Very malty with oak and bourbon notes. Reminds of all manner of distillations. Sweetish candy and a little bit of cleanser. Definitely a knockout. Strong carbonation visible in a clear amber-copper body with a short, lacing eggshell head. As for taste, yeast and candis and loads of malt and dark, ripe fruit. Just bursting with flavor. Intense. Bourbon and warming alcohol wash over the back end without flooding it. Oak and vanilla, sour cherry and faint caramel. Sticky-sweet with a touch of bitterness to balance. Medium-full body with a boozy, dry, and wonderfully fruity aftertaste. Complex and extremely robust. A little hot for me, though the heat works better here than in other examples. I’d like not to overrate this, but sometimes, a beer just perfectly matches a moment, and my experience with this one tops those of both Westy and Berny 12. Big thanks, Jason!

Bomber. Pour is coppery red with a minimal head. Aromas are sweet caramel malt dominated with some nice spicing and fruit in the background. Maybe a touch of soap, too. The spiciness comes through as a cloves presence. Flavor is not quite as nice, however since there is a bit too much of the sweetness with throws things slightly towards the cloying, syrupy end of the spectrum. That soap is still hanging around in the background a little bit, too. The barrel aging comes through much better in the flavor than in the aroma. There is an underlying oaky feel to it all, maybe with a bit of a peat/smoke character. Generally, I’m for this one, but I don’t think it comes even close to stacking up to some of the better quads.

4/8/07: Bottle.
Bright orange red body. Nose of alcohol, orange zest and spice. Flavor of alcohol, cherry, caramel malts other fruit and did I mention, yes… alcohol. Finish is harsh and flirts with a whisky-like character. Quite a blasphemous hook-up!

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear ruby, creamy albeit brief head. Woody, perfumy almondy nose. Very sweet with thick, almost oily mouthfeel. Almondy yeast character, butterscotch and strawberries are being pushed back by oak and bourbon. Very potent and malty, reminiscent of a brandy. Intense. The wood is well strong, but it still works fine.

Weyerbacher Brewing do many things well and one of them is producing oak barrel versions of their beers. Blasphemy is well blended quad with oak, bourbon, and caramel malt flavors. Strong alcohol "zing" in this medium body lightly foamed Belgian style foam. $8.50 for a 22 ounce bomber, however I believe it was worth it. Blasphemy went well with English Stilton cheese.
