The nose is sweet, but not particularly round other than a hint of toast. A bit of alcohol and wood. Also a bit of alcohol and hops, as well astringency. The mouthfeel is smooth enough, though not a wower for the style. Rather sweet, perhaps cloyingly so. It’s over a creamy vanilla like sweetness. Figs? Raisins? Smooth with big alcohol. Also a bit of fruity astringency. Not the cleanest yeast strain maybe? Maybe the right strain for a scotch ale? Very boozy after a bit. Damn me and my love for barleywines!!!! wilkie (1193), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 21, 2008 From old rating, last year sometime. Pours amber-brown, with a decent head. Overwhelming smell of caramel and hops--pine, grapefruit. Aftertaste, is strong with alcohol, but also hoppy. Good beer, but not for the weak. Nihon (240), Vernon, Connecticut, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 18, 2008 A murky brown/orange color that pours with a small cream colored head. A lot of fruit and alcohol in the nose. Bananas, caramel, and spice. The alcohol hits you in the face at first taste. Some spice and maltiness, but none of the fruitiness from the nose. A pretty good creamy body. Leaves you with a lot of alcohol on the tongue. santos999 (318), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 16, 2008 This is the one. This is the beer that, oh so many years ago (eh, about 4), turned me on to this world of weird beers and even weirder people. Somehow, through the Miller and the Bud, this light shone with such intensity that I haven’t looked away since. The aroma is deep and sensuous, with dark fruit (plums, raisins, dates), brown sugar, and molasses. The taste is a thick, rich, and intense. Again dark fruits and sweet notes blend to make an intriguing brew that keeps you sipping. It’s all balanced out by a warm, soothing alcohol flavor. Truly one of my favorite English style Barleywines. The malt steals the show, and I’m freaking glad it does. How many more IPA’s wrongfully dubbed as Barleywines have to be brewed before we realize that this style is about the sweet stuff, the warm stuff, the rich stuff, and not the hops? tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA

Inoffensive, but definitely needs more time to mellow. Sweet and spicy aroma with dominant notes of malty caramel, minty hops and alcohol. Pours a thick, viscous dark amber with a thin head leaving no lacing. Flavor and palate are still a tad rough around the edges. Copper, vanilla and fusel alcohol on the tongue. Harsh alcoholic finish. I see a bit of potential but damn, this is hot right now. BigDaddyBlues (39), Columbus, Ohio, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jan 11, 2008 Upon dumping this into a glass it fizzed a little bit then faded just as quick. The aroma is very earthy and has a ton of malt with a strong smell of caramel. The flavor is very bitter and has some earthy hops but a smooth caramel coating that coats your mouth. The caramel coating and flavor last for a while after the beer is in your stomach. i personally like how well hidden the booze is considering it is 11.1%.
