Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

deep barely flavors that isnt shy to show its alcohol bite. dry fruit and raison hints that finish with brown sugar tones. Very nice for a barely wine. Recommend to drink with a god cheese or smoked meat.

Bottle. Pours a mahogany color with a smallish beige colored head. Aroma is dark fruit, alcohol, brown sugar, caramel. Flavor is rich caramel malts, dried cherries and figs, raisins, brown sugar. Palate is full bodied, mildly carbonated, finished warm and sweet. This is one of the better brews from a place that consistantly dissapoints me. It no Old Horizontal, but it damn good.

FLAVOR LIKE A FRUIT CANDY (DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE, BUT THEN IS IT WORTH THE PRICE, OR THE EFFORT)? GOOD BODY AND CARBONATION THAT IS SOFT AND STINGY (VERY NICE). A NICE MALT (NOT TOO HARD WITH THE FRIGGIN CHOCO/CARA ROBOT)TASTE THAT FADES IN INTEREST BEFORE THE BIG BOTTLE IS FINISHED.BUT IT IS INTRUIGING FOR A SPELL.MOSTLY FLAVOR OF A RAISIN OR CURRANT (THOUGH I HAD REMEMBERED A DISTICT CHERRY FLAVOR FROM YEARS BACK) AND FRAGRANT APPLE OR A PEARISH TINGE IN THERE. MOLASSES IN THE MALT SPEAKS TO THE CLASSES. OK BETTER CCOOOLLDD OR WWAARRMM. NOT IN BETWEEN.

12oz bottle.
2005 batch, courtesy of JHop via trade. Pours a dark ruby, almost mahogany, with tiny bits of yeast in stasis throughout the liquid. Aroma is vinous, alcoholic, malty-rich and sweet with a touch of clover and tobacco leaf. Flavor is intense rich malt with a slightly dry bite (though still plenty sweet) with leafy, medium-bitter hops, dash of raisin, a bit of nutty yeast and smooth toasty alcohol that almost gets a little boozy. Monster-thick palate coats every corner of the mouth and becomes a touch cloying. American barleywines seem to fall into two camps: sweet and leafy/grassy/lightly fruity (epitomized by DFH’s Olde School) or leafy/grassy, dry, and hopped up the yingwoo (epitomized by seemingly every version made by the higer-volume West Coast breweries). I hate the latter, adore the former, and this is one I adore. I look forward to opening my other bottle of this gem in 2008.

Bottle; poured a brownish amber. Not much head. Aroma of dark fruit, alcohol, brown sugar and a general sweetness. Flavor was good, alcohol pretty well hidden. A general sweetness in the flavor too. Flavor of dark fruit and brown sugar. Could have been more balanced and complex; still slightly above average for the style.

Pours a nice red color with absolutley no head. Pretty thick pour too. Could have been sampled too cold because at first it was nothing but a sweet syrup alcohol bomb. Let it sit to calm down. Came back 30 minutes later to the same. Sorry, liked the effort but no. Maybe more age would help? I just thought this was a sugary alcoholic mess.

12 oz. bottle. Thick foamy head, dark crimson pour. Smells of sweet malt, leather, rock candy. Sweet flavor with nice balance. Warming quality with a little heat. Enjoyable.

Bottle...sweet bubble-gum-like aroma and flavor with dry aftertones, noticeable alcohol throughout the tasting experience. Beautiful dark color with white foamy head which stayed afloat from start to finish, nice lacing. I will definitely get this again and age it a bit next time.
