While I enjoy the oaked version of this brew, the multiple flavors - raisins, dried cherries, perhaps dates - seem a bit cloying and the alcohol is super hot. Not bad, but certainly not among the top American barleywines right now. johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA

Pours a nice rich amber color with medium size off white head. Nice lacing of tight small bubbles. Aroma of dates, raisins and figs. Taste is exceptionally well balanced of hops and malt. Has a sweet flavor without overpowering and the alcohol is well hidden. Has a bit of a fruity dry finish. Very nice! b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 1, 2007 Beautiful dark ruby red color with big bubbly cream head that diminishes and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is very nice, vinous and filled with fruit. Mouthfeel is quite thick and oily. Flavor is good, very malty, sweet with just a little fruit notes and a slight alcohol burn that left my lips sticky. BeerVirgin72 (814), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

Poured a beautiful light Ruby color with a nice creamy head. Smelled like sweet cherries. Taste was phenominal. This is truly a very good barleywine. A bit sweeter then some I have had. Tasted citrus, cherries and raisins up front. Some spice on the back end, and a definite kick on the finish with the alcohol warming your insides. This was a true pleasure to drink! Needed a 12 oz to round out the night and since I put this in the fridge this afternoon I thought why not. Pours dark amber with a thhin but stable tan head. The aroma is light for a BW, with a bit of the typical dried fruit notes. The taste is sweet with a big alcohol taste on the back end. Overall feels nice in the mouth but alcohol is rather noticeable. I’ll look forward to comparing this to insanity. DrD (61), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 8, 2007 A luscious beer. Silky smooth. Warming. A nice, rich melange of flavors--especially as the brew approaches room temp. My only complaint here is that the rather strong alcohol spice tends to dominate and overpower this Idiot’s true potential. Ergo, the remaing bottles will hibernate until the fall.
