Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

This pours a deep reddish copper with a slender ecru head that haloes fairly quickly. the aroma is warm with a light caramel at the base topped with figs, a faint floral bouquet, and alcohol. Warm and peppery on the tongue. The flavor is carmel with dates, alcohol and a mild hop bitterness. It finishes on a peppery, warm alcohol note. Nice.

I agree with the commercial description. Nice spicey dried fruit aroma. Not much of a head. I can think of a few great cheeses and make this a dessert beer.

Pours cloudy red with tan frothy head. texture is somewhere between wine and beer, seems to work, as it goes down smooth.

Bottle from Astor Liquors in Laurel, MD. Pours copper with a dissapating yellowish off white head. Faint aroma of sugary dark fruits. Very soft and fine carbonation. Initial flavor of caramel malt, brown sugar, and figs. Finish is fruity with a peppery hop bite and detectable alcohol that warms the windpipe.

Bottle. Copper-brown, with a dense fizzy toffee colored head. A fruity malt aroma, with no evident alcohol. Strong, thick, sweet and a tad bit sour.

This is a good barley wine. One too many of these babies and you will be wearing a jesteroutfit and doing a mannequin pose like our friend on the label. This beer poured dark red/brown with no head. The aroma was a sweet mix of fruitiness and malt. The taste was all malt and alcohol with little to no hop intrusion. I love hops, but this is like the ghetto. Hops don’t belong here...so they don’t come here.

This beer starts off with a medium red color, very thin, quickly diminishing head, and a sweet smell with the hint of apples. It has a clean flavor, slightly sweet and fruity, crisp palate, and very short finish. I do enjoy this beer, even though barleywines are not my first choice. This is one that I prefer aged into its Insanity variant, and have cellered a couple of bottles to see if it ages as well outside of a bourbon cask as within. (Cellared one year) - This pours a near opaque reddish amber, with a thin tan head. The aroma has shifted more to a caramel aroma, with a little sweetness in it. The sweetness has fallen out, leaving some nice caramel flavors. Alcohol is a bit more noticeable, and seems to have filled out the mouthfeel a bit more. From my memory, this gets much better after the year on it.
