Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

This beer starts off with a medium red color, very thin, quickly diminishing head, and a sweet smell with the hint of apples. It has a clean flavor, slightly sweet and fruity, crisp palate, and very short finish. I do enjoy this beer, even though barleywines are not my first choice. This is one that I prefer aged into its Insanity variant, and have cellered a couple of bottles to see if it ages as well outside of a bourbon cask as within. (Cellared one year) - This pours a near opaque reddish amber, with a thin tan head. The aroma has shifted more to a caramel aroma, with a little sweetness in it. The sweetness has fallen out, leaving some nice caramel flavors. Alcohol is a bit more noticeable, and seems to have filled out the mouthfeel a bit more. From my memory, this gets much better after the year on it.

Pours dark mahgony with a fully receding tan head. Aroma of vinous, chewy malt, flowery resinous malts, toffee, and brandy. Taste is spicy, sweet, and alcoholic. This beer leans heavily on the phenolic side of things. Mouthfeel is full to heavy bodied with lively carbonation. A bit thin bodied and alcoholic. Not impressed.

Big thanks to Mrbendo for this. Pours a hazy muddy copper. Hint of bananna in the aroma along with big candied malt flavor. Almost a warming brandy taste as it warms. Thick velvet feel.

Bottle.

I came to this one with high hopes. It poured light bown, offering caricaturedly sweet cotten candy and apples in the aroma - already not my favorite characteristics in a barleywine. The mouthfeel comes off thin despite the 11+% and this leaves the flavor open to seem unbalanced in its sweet boozy nature touched up only by bits of spice and mild hops in the close. Overall, a disappointment.

I really enjoy this beer. Has all the qualites/taste of what you would want from a BW. Has a nice balance/ leans more towards malt than hops which I liked. The palate is nice and a bit on the full/thicker side. One thing to consider when trying this beer is letting it age for a year or so. Before a year the ending of a sip is ok, but can almost have a metal taste. If you age it enough the ending changes to smooth/ almost velvety finish which is very nice. The change is that significant in my opinion.

Thanks to MrBendo. The name of this beer is my way of saying bye to 2006. Dark, hazy orange amber color. awesome aroma of caramelized malt. Flavor of caramel, figs, raisins, dates, RUM. Very heavy texture. smooth and creamy on the palate. This beer is a text book version of a English Barley Wine. Very beautiful drink! Happy New Year!

From a 12 oz. bottle with no bottling/freshness date. Poured a reddish caramel brown with a fluffly, creamy off-white head that settled into a thin sudsy, creamy lacing, small amount of ringed sticking. Aromas of alcohol soaked raisins, figs and dates, dark caramelized sugar, sweet spicy and solvent-like alcohol on the edges. Moderate carbonation and a crisp, dry, alcohol laced, creamy full bodied mouthfeel. Pleasant English barley wine taste despite the strong alcohol presence, figs and date splashed with rum, caramel toffee, caramelized sugar, cocoa, a grainy alcohol flavor that provides a good deal warmth, a soft hop bitterness towards the end and a dryish, fruity, malty finish. Definitely a sipper, but tasty and balanced, if you like barley wines then this is a must try.

Pours hazy dark amber with a thin head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is cherries, faint smoke and alcohol. Slightly thick body/mouth feel. Carmel sweet up front with a dry spicy alcohol finish.
