Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

I lucked out when I bought this for the first time. I found a six pack that had a few newer bottles and it had a couple bottles that were obvioulsy much older than theother ones (these older ones had a lot of sediment in them...opposed to the clear, sedimentless newer bottles with the new weyerbacher caps). The aroma is a lot of malt and some fruits. The taste is rather sweet frutis typical of a barleywine, and a decent amount of the malt comes through on the taste. the palate is very thick and smooth, and the 11 % alcohol is hardly noticeable in this brew.

Pours a near opaque orangeish brown. A sparse tan head with persistent lacing. Smells of rich nutty malt. Strident alcohol aroma with hints of oak and raisin. Tastes of rich malt and oaky vanilla. Lots of alcohol, overpowers the other flavors a bit. Some biting hops in the finish as it warms. Lightly sticky mouth. Big beer. Some hops linger, builds as you get further down the pint. This could use a bit of age, it’s a little hot right now. Loads of potential though.

Brown with a tan head. Aroma is sweet and alcoholic with some fruit notes. Thick somewhat chewy body. Alcohol is warming and noticeable. Flavor is fruity and hoppy with some sweetness to it.

Very fruity aroma with this one. Not much of a head. Heavy bodied, fruity, thin-syrup like consistancy with a bit of a bite. Very bitter-sweet taste. I loved this one because I didn’t detect much of an alcohol taste.

12 oz bottle. Sent back from The Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Beer pours a medium-dark amber brown with a small. white, frothy, mostly diminishing head. The aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain, moderate notes of caramel; Yeasty with a trace note of dough; Miscellaneous notes of moderate alcohol, raisin/date, light note of oak and vanilla. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly-to-moderately bitter, lightly acidic with a long, hot, moderately bittersweet, lightly astringent finish. Nasty pronounced flash of copper in the aftertaste. The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is soft.

Sweet malty aroma. The body is a deep brown, no where near black..but very nice. The head was whitish-but faded fast. Hop flavor is little, the finish is long and syrupy. Not a bad beer, not an easy drinking beer. Definatly went with the cigars well.

Sweet and syrupy, with a roasty malt flavor. ABV is noticeable from the first sip, and gets more pronounced as it warms. Finish is fruity and sweet with an alcohol sting. Good BW.

The Blithering Idiot is one of the better barleywines I’ve had to date. The pour is dark amber with just a slight head. The aroma is fruity, malty, with some alcohol present. Flavor is the key to this brew though. The taste is very heavy in the sweet malt department, with a very nice fruitiness as well. There is a hint of hop detected, but not too much. The finish is smooth, which matches the nice mouthfeel of this brew. Can’t wait to have another."
