Commercial Description:
At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

The dominant feature is a sugary sweetness that gets to be a bit much toward the end. There is a low hop presence so it’s not too bitter, which I would have preferred to balance out the sweetness. There are some hints of caramel and maple syrup. The mouth is thick and chewy, with medium carbonation. Tastes of some candy like flavors come through at the end, but it’s hard to determine exactly what. Overall it’s too sugary, but has a solid alcohol lift that makes it’s a decent brew.

Pours to a cloudy brown, one-finger head that didn’t disappear until the end of the glass.alcoholic smell with what seems like cherry or raspberry notes, with a bit of nutmeg. Taste is like a dry wine but pleasant with fruity notes. Mouthfeel is heavy and coating. No real aftertaste. A slightly bitter finish, but not bad.

bottle, pours hazy red with a medium off white head. Aroma is full of candy sugar and caro-syrup, with some citrus notes. Sweet malt and sweet rock candy are lightly balanced with some carmel and prune notes. This stuff is really sweet, and it’s almost unpleasant.

Dark body with a small head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, simple and balanced aroma and flavor. Malt sweetness, caramel and nuts with a touch of hops and toffee.

For me barley wine is THE drink. So it’s hard to be critical. This doesn’t disappoint even though it’s not my favorite barley wine. Red-brown in color and clear, with a tannish head that disappears quickly. For the style, to me, the taste is in the medium-sweet range, i.e., a little dryer or not as sweet as I would prefer (other people might find this preferable though). Slightly oily texture with slightly fizzy carbonation and a long and lingering slightly bitter finish, i.e., more hops than I’d expect in a typical barley. Overall, sweet and warming, noticeable caramel, dough, pears or apple, light spice (nutmeg? cinnamon?), and while the alcohol is apparent throughout the pour, I don’t mind this. A bit hot in that respect, but not dominant. A great, interesting brew that repays sipping, especially on an evening in the depths of winter.

Strong grape and apple smells. Murky orange in appearance with almost no head that disappears almost instantly. Nice carbonation present. Great mouthfeel. Alcohol is present but has a great fruity palate Not as strong as the American barley wines. I prefer this to the Americans. Very nice. Ha a bitter aftertaste. Recommended

Bottle into a pint glass. Pours cloudy mahogany color with light head. Aroma is much more wine-like than beer. (I know its a barley wine, but the aroma is strong even for that.) Taste is sweet and lacks the hops to balance it out completely but not too bad. Has an oily feel on the palate, but the high alcohol is not very evident to the taste. Overall, it is not a bad barley wine. I would buy again.

Iced tea colouring with slim to no head. Very malty, nutty nose. Taste is very malty, slightly sweet, and hinting of alcohol. Oily mouthfeel and sits rather heavy. Tastes very much like barley or other grains.

12 oz. bottle recieved in trade from Daknole- Thanks! Served in shaker- poured semi transparent darkened amber with ruby tints in color, low carbonation, wafer thin white head formed and tried to lace. Aroma of almost a wine like quality, malt, and light floral hops. Hits the mouth with low-wide body, malt is there and is pleasantly laced with caramel, mild sweetness in the middle, finish it warming and awesome!
