I had huge expectations of this beer, and it is terrible, I’d almost rather drink Anheuser World Select. Sort of like drinking a pumpkin pie filling. It smells like eggs and tastes like 4 teaspoons of nutmeg mixed into an ounce of water. It hurts to drink.
Maybe it needs to age a bit and mellow out. I’m putting a oversized bottle away for about 5 months, and I promise to re-rate at that point. But as for now, it’s horribly caustic to even put this in my mouth. I wish this on no one. JonR888710 (999), Cochabamba, Bolivia
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Aug 31, 2005 Pours a very hazy, thickly brewed tea. Predominately brown with oranges, yellows and reds. Head is buttercream but is literally gone within seconds. Aroma is non-descript herbs, perhaps basil and mint, but nothing more detectable than "some leaf". Taste is bold, heavy and thick. Heavy malt, caramel riding on top of leafy herbs and anise. Could benefit from carbonation to break up the syrupyness of this beer. Powerful alcohol 8 or 9 percent. Wait, no, its 13%...good job for disguising that. Overall this beer could benefit from more carbonation and a more varied, palate. TomDecapolis (3213), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 28, 2005 Pours a translucent amber with really no head. Aroma of honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, other spices and alcohol. Flavor the same with some hops, but more sweetness, cinnamon and alcohol than hops. I have another bottle I plan to age and will re-rate if age does anything different. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | Aug 23, 2005 Updated: Sep 11, 2005PLEH! Wow. I mean... the aroma alone... wow. It’s overpowering. So is the flavor. If you’re looking for a chug beer, go somewhere else. I can barely sip this. Pours a thin dark amber body with no head. Aroma is dominated by honey and cinnamon with alcohol. The flavor is the same - MY GOD THIS IS SWEET. If this was a $2 bottle it woulda been poured a long time ago. But I feel like it’s a mission to finish this. It’s totally unique and reminds me of mead. It’s basically alcoholic honey. Ug. Why would you make this as your 10 year beer? Perhaps I don’t have the palate for this, but judging from the reviews, no one else does either. I must admit, it is improving as it warms and I get more and more used to it, but it’s still a challenge. Once again - SIP THIS SLOWLY. If you chug this beer it’s undrinkable, sipping it’s almost enjoyable. Almost. Worth trying I guess, but I’m never getting this again. If you can drink this whole bottle in 1 go without stopping you are God... and a god damn idiot. pjk33 (384), Sligo - Curllsville Heights, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 19, 2005 Bottle. I really didn’t expect what I got from this beer. I read that it was an ale and expected a solid ale. Instead, it is a strong, strong, strong ale! It pours amber with no head at all. Strong alcohol aroma, almost like whiskey. Strong alcohol flavor as well with very little carbonation. This tastes like a rough barleywine to me. It needs to age for a while to mellow, methinks. Not a great brew, but I’ll give it some time to get better. It caught me off guard, that’s for sure. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 19, 2005 No head over a reddish body. Nice aroma - light, somewhat minty, yet malty too. Various heavy, sweet fruits abound. Thick and chewy flavor/body. Hoppy, but this brew is highly unusual for an ASA. It’s more malty than is expected, and the hops don’t balance well in the flavor. Not too sweet, yet I still taste mint here, which isn’t altogether a good complement to the other flavors. notalush (2690), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 19, 2005 Clear copper pour with absolutely no head - very potent aroma of alcohol, ginger, nutmeg, honey, heather - minimal carbonation - oily mouthfeel - highly spiced, but still not enough to balance out the cloying sweetness from the honey - very evident alcohol - some lavender, clove - very clumsy and palate-bludgeoning (did I spell that right?) - with some aging maybe this will get better, but I doubt by much.
