Commercial Description:
Echo is a “Rye-PA” at 6.8%, brewed with pale, crystal, carapils, and 30% rye malts, bittered to 60 IBUs, and late-hopped with Simcoe and Centennial Hops. This dark-copper ale combines the citrus kick of the hops with the spicy flavor that comes from using 30% rye. This winter IPA will help you bridge the gap between now and Spring.

Draft at The Ravenous Pig. The pour yields a clear, dark, copper tinted body with a small, foamy, off-white head. The froth settles quickly to a thin, lasting blanket, leaving thin, sticky spirals of lacing behind. Caramel shows in the malt base, alongside a substantial and sharp rye grain component, with big grapefruit and green grassy hop notes. There’s a good deal of unfortunate soapiness to the hop aroma. Flavors are similarly structured, with big rye coming to the forefront and dry, lightly sweet caramel fading a bit. The hop profile shows bitter grapefruit and kafir lime leaves, but again has a soapy overtone that is not agreeable. Medium bodied, with balanced carbonation, the palate finishes with a bit of astringency. Drinkable, but quite flawed.

Bottle. Pours a coppery brown with a large foamy head. Aromas are weak, especially for anything that calls itself and IPA. A bit of bread and rye with a touch of very understated citrus hops. Flavor is kind of a mess, too. If this didn’t classify as an IPA I probably wouldn’t have a problem with it, but man... while there are some definite hops there, they do not ever take over or even assert themselves strongly. As is, it sits in no man’s land as a rye beer with a bit of citrus hops. Woo hoo!

On tap at Publick House. Aroma has strong floral characteristics, with soapy notes and a hint of rye to boot. Palate is nicely creamy, supportive of the spicy and flowery notes in the body. Finishes of medium length, bitter, and very drinkable.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of floral hops, slight toasted malt, slight rye, slight dish soap, and pollen. Poured copper in color with a medium-sized, dense, tan/off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Fair lacing. Flavor is slightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of hops, slight toasted malts, light pollen, slight artificial sweetener, and a hint of rye. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Hoppy, lightly sweet, lightly dry finish. I am a bit disappointed in this beer. Rye flavor is lacking IMHO. Troegs Scratch 18 is a better Rye IPA.

Tap at Barcade. Deep amber colour with a thick white head. Aroma is quite spicy. Lots of rye malt character and a bright piny simcoe spiciness. Quite fresh and piny tasting. The palate is very crisp and firm with a nice assertive hoppiness. Light grapefruit flavour as well. Hoppy but not all that bitter. Solid IPA.
