Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Appearance: Pours an opaque, medium copper body with a thin, white ring of bubbles. Smell: Strikingly herbaceous with strong, redolent notes of earthy plantlife. Its like walking into a thriving greenhouse and having the door chained shut behind you. Taste: Again, very earthy with plenty of lush green, herby, and wooden flavors. No real discernible malt flavors, but there are some sugar-encrusted flavors that peak through the hops and bitterness now and again. Finishes with a powerful, lasting bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Just a bit oily/sticky. Drinkability: Interesting, that’s for sure, but the hop flavor didn’t really appeal to me in this one.

Well i guess im strange, i was so sure this one was top 50! Very nice murky orange beer with a dirty tan head. A very Belgian tasting IPA with loads of fruity flavors and beet sugar. The best hop taste ever with high bitterness and no resiny aftertaste. The palate is so smooth its almost slimy. Starts sweet and end dry, hidden burn that makes your head spin. Inmense malty body that balances it all out in the end. My new favorite IPA thanks to Drewbeerme for this gem.

Bottle shared by Beer_Hawk. Pours a hazy pale orange. Malty aroma accented by citrus (grapefruit and orange). Rich barleywine- like maltiness on the initial flavor, but more toffee notes than caramel. Middle has some lip smacking resiny hops that give off flavors of grapefruit, and more subtle notes of peach and apricot. Semi dry bitter finish, and alcohol is well hidden for 12%, and its not very hot or warming either. This struggles for identity between a IIPA and Barleywine. Interesting beer that I can see other people disliking. Thanks Steve. Perhaps I should open mine before the hops fade even more.

22 oz bottle. Pours a cloudy amber color with lite brown foam head. Aroma and taste of hops and malt. The aroma and taste also spoiled fruit this was a real turn off for this beer. First time for Phoenix hops hopefully my last.

Pours with a slighlty cloudy, orange body topped by an off-white, medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a grapefruity hop note in the finish, as well as, some flowery notes and a little bitterness. Full bodied, warming, a bit dry and tingly on the tongue.

22oz bottle: medium to dark copper color with relatively big fluffy off white head. Aroma has fair amount of a blend of citrusy/herbal hops, light caramel, note of vanilla, touch of chocolate. Flavor is malty, bit of harsh hops, fairly metallic, faint vanilla, with a harshly bitter finish. Personally I was very underwhelmed, not balanced at all, but not even like a pure hop machine because it is so metallic and harsh. Just not particularly good overall, not the best blend of hops.

Thanks to JB175 for the bottle. Darkish amber color. Smell of hops, citrus zest, grapefruit, apricots, malt, minor pine, pineapple juice, flowers, alcohol and caramel. Taste of pineapples, grapefruit, oranges, pine, grass, alcohol, hops. and a wonderful bitterness at the end. Very nice 2x IPA!

This is deceptively carbonated; poured carefully at first it seems to not produce much of a head, but then quickly starts to blossom to a four-finger thickness. The head is a light tan color and sits atop a very hazy, orangish-amber colored brew. The aroma smells of orange zest, slightly cheesy hops and dusty malt. Touches of pine and perhaps a hint of menthol round out the hop aromatics. The hop-citrus notes also take on notes of tangerine and orange juice. The hop aromatics are quit a bit more muted than I was expecting, in fact the whole aroma is a touch more muted that I expected.

Sweet, and quite hefty, this beer has a thick enough body to be a Barleywine. There is an unfortunate, overly harsh note in the finish that is both astringent and phenolic like to the point of heavy plastic. In fact this reminds me specifically of an unpleasant flavor that I just can’t quite place; perhaps it is something medicinal. Whatever it is, it might just be some interplay between the hops and alcohol, but it might also be something off. Otherwise the hop character is quite citrus like; notes of orange zest, grapefruit, tangelo and lychee are all quite noticeable.

Wait, I almost have it, that harsh flavor, is very reminiscent to the aftertaste in a cheap tequila. How did they get that flavor in this brew. If it wasn’t for that off taste, this might actually be pretty tasty. It is way too thick to be a Double IPA, but that is just a personal opinion on style.
