Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Great strong IPA. A sipping beer that you don’t end up sipping. Bitter as an Arctic wind--but just enough mouthfeel and malt sugar to make things balanced and warming. Wish I had more.

bottle- pours pale rusty copper, with some sentiment with a nice sized head off white and brilliant lacing. smells floral, citrus hops almost sting the nose. whew. i can tell this is going to be really flavorful. tastes citrussy, piney, lots of fruit. juicey almost. sweet malt evens out this hoppy beast. i think it might be too sweet and it ends up tasting like grapefruit juice but more syrupy. very good. cheers pops!

Bottle via secret santa, thanks! Pours a rusty-amber color with a substantial off white, almost tan colored head. Nice lacing. Aroma is sweet, some pine and grapefruit with a mild caramel body. Flavor is floral hops, grapefruit, pine, sweet malts, alcohol. Palate is medium-full, large amount of carbonation, warm, bitter finish. Barleywine-esque. Perhaps this has oxidized some. Still decent, though.

One of the worst beers I have ever tasted. this is the first triple IPA i have tried, and my initial skepticism proved to be right. It was too much of everything, in my opinion. The hoppiness and extreme malt flavors cancelled each other out, and reminded me of a bad barleywine mixed with cough syrup. From reading other reviews i see that some like this but I’ll pass.

Not quite as big a drink as I thought it would be, but it sure makes for good drinking when you have near blizzard conditions outside. The body’s a very slightly hazed amber with a huge, rocky, crusty off-white head that does some heavy lacing. The aroma isn’t very strong, some pine and grapefruit over a mild caramel body. Happily for this hophead, the hoppy bitterness kicks up a notch or two in the flavor, the sweet malts barely holding their own. But the hops tone down a bit in the finish, leaving you with a moderate but lingering bitter finish. Okay stuff here.

Bottle: Orange amber pour with light haziness, large off-white head. Lacing was immensely thick. Subdued (for an IIPA) aroma of sweet fruits and malt. Citrus is most noteable. Tasted citrus & pine hops with plenty of sweet malt, caramel, and more fruitiness. The tail is a lingering sweet and tart with a warmness from the high ABV. The finish seemed to linger forever! Thanks to DocLock for this gem.

Bottle from Styles. Medium amber colored, pretty hazy. A dense head, off-white in color forms slowly, the bubbles struggling to break free. Very reminiscent of a nitro pour. Great lacing. Aroma is interesting, earthy and some berry characteristics (I’m not wearing my tinfoil hat/signal blocker so the description listed to my left may be influencing my senses). Plenty of caramel sweetness to back things up in the olfactory department. Interesting take on the IIPA in aroma, I’m used to the West Coast/ "C" hop aromas full of pine and citrus. Full bodied, quite coating on the palate. Sweet caramel malt initially, big hop bitterness and presumably flavor. Never a harsh bitterness. An interesting take on the IIPA world.
