Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Not quite as big a drink as I thought it would be, but it sure makes for good drinking when you have near blizzard conditions outside. The body’s a very slightly hazed amber with a huge, rocky, crusty off-white head that does some heavy lacing. The aroma isn’t very strong, some pine and grapefruit over a mild caramel body. Happily for this hophead, the hoppy bitterness kicks up a notch or two in the flavor, the sweet malts barely holding their own. But the hops tone down a bit in the finish, leaving you with a moderate but lingering bitter finish. Okay stuff here.

Bottle: Orange amber pour with light haziness, large off-white head. Lacing was immensely thick. Subdued (for an IIPA) aroma of sweet fruits and malt. Citrus is most noteable. Tasted citrus & pine hops with plenty of sweet malt, caramel, and more fruitiness. The tail is a lingering sweet and tart with a warmness from the high ABV. The finish seemed to linger forever! Thanks to DocLock for this gem.

Bottle from Secret Santa! I shared this with ross. Well this stuff pours out a murky light orange with a thick white head on it. Aroma is hops and citrus with a sweet smell of alcohol. As the aroma would indicate the taste of this is boozy as all hell. Wow. Kind of rediculous really. The almost 12% isn’t hidden at all. Also this is my first experience with Phoenix hops but once you get past the sweet and heavy alcohol you get a VERY grassy flavor from the hops that follow. Can’t say it was a wonderful experience but certianly not terrible. Interesting beer but probably wouldn’t buy it again. Oh yeah this beer is HUGE! alcohol in it nearly floored me thank god I split this with someone. Ross said he had this beer when it was first released and was better so maybe this one didn’t hold age very well, although I think its only about 6 months old.

Bottle. Hazy orange. Creamy tan head. Aroma: Malt and citric hoppiness. Flavor: Good balance between malt sweetness and bitterness. Long finish.

12oz bottle. When I 1st tried this (as soon as it came out), I couldn’t finish it. It was terrible (smelled tasted like gasoline and pure alcohol). If I rated it the 1st time around, i would have given it a .5. I figure I’ll give it another chance, so here it goes. Poured a deeper and slightly cloudy orange color with a smaller sized off white head. Lots of small floaters. Aromas of citrus, alcohol (but not nearly as strong as I remembered it being), melons, some caramel, and a touch of pine. Initial taste of all alcohol. Burning. Once I got past that initial strong alcohol, I got some citrus, grape skins, grapefruit, pine, alcohol, light caramel and then some more alcohol. Don’t light a match near me.

Shared with Bullet2urBrain. Where was all of the hop? I suppose I was expecting much more hop bitterness from this self-proclaimed triple IPA. Very smokey/roasty flavors from the phoenix hops, which I’ve never had before. I’m not sure about the 109 IBU’s, but I also question that with Ruination. Nice to look at, and a nice change. Especially fromthe porters we’ve been swamped in recently.

My Bottom Line:
This self-proclaimed Triple IPA’s bountiful citrusy aromatics and forceful hop flavor don’t necessarily cohere with its frail cereals, as it contemplates the spiral downwards into vegetal realms.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the clear reddish straw blond.
-Chalkiness emerges from the energetic hop bitterness and yeasty finish.
-There is no malt complexity to be found in my glass.
-Soft effervescence enlivens the lean cereals.

Bottle; no date.
