Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Pours hazy dark orange with a soapy beige head. The aroma has lots of alcohol and has a very resinous hop presence along with thick sweet malt. Medium / thick body with lots of soft carbonation. The taste starts with cloying malt, resinous hops and a boatload of alcohol ~ comes off as dirty tasting. The finish has more dirty hops, some pine, more alcohol burn and some grapefruit. The dirtiness and unbridled alcohol really hold this back from being anything worth caring about.

Bottle, while sitting at the bar at D’s in Regent Square just outside of downtown Pittsburgh. Pours a dark orange with a clotted creamy thick head that settles in a few minutes. Nose is more like barleywine that’s hopped up and I really believe that this should be considered a barleywine more than a 2IPA. The hop is unbelievable in that there is only one in this beer as it is spicy and flavorful, then a smooth slide into a great closing bitterness. I’m not sure that I’ve had the Phoenix hop before, but I am impressed with it. I actually still smelled and tasted some citrus in this, but definitely lots of malt and flavor - hard to describe the flavors as the sweetness was evident and the viscosity was very big... smooth, but sticky and probably too much body (syrup like, not velvety). This was good though, and well worth a try.

Less grapefruit and pine than I expected from the commercial description, but not surprising if it is intended to be hopped with a British hop. Hazy amber, good head. Nose of spicey hops and sweet malts. Taste is bitter, bitter, bitter. I would have welcomed some west coast orange or grapefruit ... like Hop Devil or Ruination. Bitter, without complexity. Mouth feel just too syrupy for an IPA which, of course, is intended to be drunk with food. And who needs 12% alcohol in an IPA. Alcohol way too obvious at the end. I’m giving it a 2.9 because it’s not that bad, but I’m pouring it out because it’s just not the kind of thing I drink.

Wonderful creamy head that lasts a long time. Hazy even though it’s not very cold. Kind of orange looking. Aroma - holy hops. Very heavy, if not downright overpowering hops, but can’t really discern much in the way of citrus/grapefruit. Syrupy mouthfeel. Almost has a barleywine taste and characteristic to it. Moderate alcohol taste. One is all I can drink of these.

Triple IPA??? Does not live up to the billing. Good but not a, "hold on to your barstool" kind of beer like Devil Dancer. Alcohol aroma ,but well hidden in the taste for 11.7% ABV. Good but not great.

Poured a murky copper with orange hues with a thin, creamy, lacing tan head. The moment the bottle openned the aroma of grapes permeated, similar to a pinot grigio. Up close the aroma is certainly hoppy, but more floral than anything else. Flavor was all over the place. Starts piney then shifts into a strange toasted grain flavor with hints of orange. Mouthfeel is heavy, lots of alcohol, plenty of heat and bitterness. The texture of the beer on the tongue really drowns the subtle flavors. I don’t think they picked the right malts to balance their hop experiment. If this is what a triple IPA is like, I’ll stick to the singles and doubles.

Feels kind of like a spiritual successor to Decadence in a way. Had this not long after the Simcoe and it seemed a little overbearing to have a double wallop of IIPA. Inferior to the Simcoe, but with the high ABV I might have to wait awhile on the other bottle and check again.

22oz - thanks Hopscotch - Aroma is very malty, wheat and orange creamsicle. Pours hazy brown-orange with a big head and great lacing. Flavor is also very malty. A messy mix of alcohol, toasted white bread, carmel and orange. A triple IPA????? The description says it won’t taste like other American IIPA’s and that’s true. I do not get the fruity bitterness either though just hot alcohol burn. Palate is tart and malty. Not very impressed. I expect big flavors from anything double or triple and this brew does not come through.
