Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Bottle courtesy of Hopdog: Poured a cloudy light brown color ale with a big foamy head with good retention. Aroma of hops is quite easily noticeable but as well there is a good malt backbone as well as something sweet (honey?). Taste is a well balance mix between some medium bitter hops without any citrus profile and some sweet malt. Body is quite full and alcohol is well hidden. This is very well done and I appreciate the initiative to brew a IIPA without big citrus hops as I believe it has been done quite a few time before.

Huge floral, citric, fruity aroma that has strong hints of grapefruit, rosehips and pineapple. The body is a mureky and almost totally opaque orange/brown. The head sitting atop the body is two finger thick, creamy and slightly off white in color. Fore is very vegetal then it got fruity like a mash of ambrosia salas left in the sun. Gets sort of tobacco tasting int he middle and slightly dry. Has a rich malt backbone running through it, but it seems somehow off like the malts, while strong in flavor, are a little stale. Just doesn’t taste "right" to me.

Pours an opaque orange/amber color with a HUGE dense and creamy beige head. Slow, moderate carbonation. Dense, clumpy lacing. Fruit (orange?) and malt aroma with a hint of alcohol as well. Flavor is initially sweet and deep malt (some toastiness to it), then it becomes earthy and fruity (light and unidentifiable). The finish is dry and mostly alcohol and bitterness. Mouthfeel is a bit thick and chewy. There is also a considerable amount of sweet stickiness to this brew. This brew is bitter, but not quite as bitter as I would have expected 109 IBUs to be! 22 oz bottle, $5.99 (?) from The Party Source (?).

12 oz bottle thanks to Pineypower! Poured clear medium orange with a tall cap of creamy beige head... quite a bit of rising carbonation and sticky lacing. Nose was uber-fragrant with some of the juiciest fruits I’ve ever encountered... pear, grapefruit, and berries.. along with earthy spices. This brew rather imploded once it hit the lips unfortunately... Dry alcohol and an unidentifiable sweetness (not very pleasant) give the first impression, followed by a high level of stale berry and lemongrass bitterness... again there was sweetness backing it, but it wasn’t very good. As this warmed, the slow alcohol burn mophed into an overpowering booziness. Syrupy on the palate, which works if you have pleasant and intriguing flavors to seep across there.. which this didn’t. Just wasn’t very good.

Bomber: Cloudy dark orange with a medium off-white head that leaves nice lacing, huge sweet earthy hops in the aroma with a chunk of alcohol and lemons. 11.7%!? Dear Eris...well it is hidden pretty well and doesn’t burn like it should. Oily, thick, chewy, full-bodied and mild carbonation. Starts and ends bitter with a sweet aftertaste.

Cold 22oz bottle: Pours an opaque orange color with a moderate bubbly light tan colored head that dissolves and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is of light fruits, flowers, rich malts and hay. Taste is of rich malts and light fruits with a bitter floral punch to it. Heavy body, oily texture and well carbonated. Ends sweetly with bitter and sour notes. Has a dry, alchol aftertaste.

22 oz. bottle. This is really a beautiful looking beer with a large, creamy, and very durable beige head that leaves a thick sticky lace over a slightly hazy gold pour. The intial aroma is of densely sweet toffee, but that soon gives way to some light fruit, citrus, and spice. All of this masks the alcohol well. Medium body that is resinous and astringent with a fine and light carbonation. Bitter from beginning to end, to the extent that many of the malt flavors are well in the background. There is some peach and caramel sweetness there, but it’s overbalanced by the grapefruit bitterness. Alcohol is more noticeable once it hits your mouth. This one can’t be drunk quickly, at least not by me!

Bottle provided by JHop. Pours hazy burnt orange with a small fizzy off-white, slightly yellowed head that mostly diminishes, lined-spotty lacing. Aroma is fragrant fruity and floral, citrus hops with caramel nutty malt (hay, meal), yeast (earth), peach, pear, pineapple and a perfumey alcohol nose. Heavy bitterness and acidity, burning dry hops and perfumey alcohol, malt and yeast make a presence beneath the hops, citrus and resiny hop finish. Medium bodied and spicy, fizzy palate.
