Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Bottle: Deep clear orange wit ha medium white head. Aroma had a big citrus kick, with some caramel and alcohol filling in the rest. Flavor, quite malty to start, burnt caramel, brown sugar, some earthy hops start to come through, some lingering bitterness. The alcohol came through a bit too much for me, as I got towards the end it was starting to bother me. And I still haven’t found a british hop that I really like.

22ouncer. Triple IPA--really dont know what to expect with this one. I guess I didn’t expect this. Aroma is overwhelmingly grapefruit, with notes of bitter hops. Flavor is surprising--initial malty sweetness is immediately taken over by a bitterness that refuses to depart from the palate as it lingers from sip to sip. I guess balance could be a little bit better. I still like it more than the overbalance of sweet malts. Maybe the british hops just arent doing it for me. Not bad, not amazing. Smell is much better than the flavor. Not bad, but I’m not sure I’d purchase this again with all of the great iipa’s on the market.

A solid double IPA. Lots of hop aroma with some malty sweetness. Nice grapefruit flavor. Good creamy medium-thick body.

Bottle. The label on the bottle says it is a Triple IPA, but I guess I do not quite understand what that means. I was expecting a lot more hops in aroma and flavor, but they all seemed to be somewhat buried by the large amount of malt content. I guess that was necessary to get to the 11.7% abv, but it just seems to lead to a good bit of unbalance. All told, the aroma was quite nice - citrus notes, caramel and some faint floral qualities. Flavor was almost all malt, with a smattering of hops. Fairly hot.

Cloudy light orange, thin head. Nose is honey, hoppy citrus, caramel, alcohol. Flavor is caramel, orange, honey. Not nearly enough hop flavor or aroma. The bitterness is there but its like they forgot the flavor hops. Way unbalanced to the malt side. Maybe if this was listed as a barleywine I wouldn’t have been so disappointed.

XL, fluffy tan head, lasting with gobs of sticky lace, webby, stringy and unrelenting. Hazy orange glow. Big nose of grapefruit, faint mustiness and bitter orange peels. Body is full, alcohol heat evident, fairly aggressive on the palate, damn near bud crushing! Lotsa hops and malt! Sweet caramel malt, hops are citrusy, grapefruity, chewy hop flavors. Finish is medium sweet and aggressively hopped, bitter. A big brew, seemingly unbalanced, alcoholly hot and fruity, seriously aggressive but not offensive. That saying" Not for the faint of heart" comes to mind. Aging it could be interesting? Beats the hell out of their 10th anniversary brew!

Amber body with a fairly large head and decent lacing. Aroma is very interesting.. hop notes were smoke, spices, and grass. Really interesting stuff. Caramel backed it well. Alcohol is there to add some bite, but is not offensive. A very interesting IIIPA that isn’t hopped to hell with PNW hops. Very enjoyable.

Pours a deep amber/brown with a nice white head. Sweet, musty aroma with a hint of hops. In the mouth, it’s quite earthy, spicy. I got a hint of cardboard in this bottle that I didn’t detect in the first two I tried, though this bottle is definitely being drunk warmer than the other two.
