Commercial Description:
Eleven is made with a single variety of hops, Phoenix, from the UK. Phoenix was developed at Wye College to be a high alpha acid (bitterness) hops with a British flavor profile. Phoenix is also low in cohumulone and high in aromatic oils, so you can throw a ton of ’em in and the beer will stay smooth and aromatic. This beer has 109 IBUs in it! The taste profile is incredibly balanced and dangerously drinkable for an 11.7% brew. But don’t look for that grapefruity-piny taste you get from US hops (not that there’s anything wrong with that), these buds are fruity and earthy with an almost berry-like aroma, to give this beer a unique taste among big IPAs. Bitterness we got! And malt to back it up, with the result being a very intriguing beer you’ll just want to sip all night thanks to Phoenix hops. Cheers!

Bottle pours a hazy light amber witha nice full creamy head. Aroma is sweet brown sugary malty and hoppy and some alcohol. Flavor is intensely bitter and fumey. The characteristic alcohol burn as it goes down and the warming sensation eminating from my upper torso tells me this is a strong brew. The malt flavor is a bit woody and papery I thought but the hops rip you back to reality by the scruff of your neck demanding your undividing attention. It warrants it. Lingering earthy bitterness, and a moderate carbonation.

Pours amber with a thin white head. Smells of oranges, mangos, pineapple and dough. Tastes bitter with lots of earthy hop elements and alcohol burn. Not much else going on here as the hops don’t blend well on the palate. I wish it tasted as good as it smells.

Wow, this is an incredibly agressive beer. Loads of alcohol and loads of hops. Also has a bit of a syrupy sweetness. While I appriciate this beer, the strong flavor quickly wears on my palate and can’t drink but so much

I’m glad I got ahold of a bottle of this, brown/orange colour to it, strong hop aroma, almost a bit pine, lovely hop taste, and pretty good.

Pours a cloudy amber with cascading bubbles and a pillowy beige head. Aroma of doughy malts and some citrusy hops. This is insanely hoppy and bitter, but at the same time extremely sweet. There’s a real candy sugariness to it, like Twizzlers on crack or something. This sweetness along with the strong alcohol warmth somewhat drowns out the hop character. There’s potential to be great, but I don’t think the single hopping of Phoenix is the right character this beer needs. Sure it’s cliche, but some C-hops would fit the bill. Still a pretty good beer, but it seems lacking.
