billdrinksbeer (18), Washington DC, USA Nov 6, 2009 Draft at RFD. Lots of peat and smoke in the aroma. Thin palette, some malt on the finish. Dark brown with no head. Pretty smooth. A good fireside sipper, almost tastes like it’s barrel-aged, but it isn’t. Good contextually, I’d like to sit by the fire and enjoy some of these. ARMed (485), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 27, 2009 This is truly a fantastic brew. The aroma is a subtle sweet caramel candle smell with a hint of a malty porter flavor but much more subtle. Yes, there is a hint of smokiness but almost invisible. This is a warming fireside brew, but I would also be opt to drink this one just about anywhere anytime. Excellent beer with a great balance of alcohol. guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Oct 25, 2009 Clear, deep copper appearance with a medium size beige head and a fair amount of lacing. Peaty, slightly nutty, moderately sweet malt aroma. Earthy taste, smoke is a little more evident, caramel, and a touch of molassas. Hops are subtle but are enough to add some bitterness and balance. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering, bittersweet finish. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Oct 24, 2009 Pours brown with a tan head. Smells of smoke, some roasted malt, caramel. Tastes smoky and roasty with some peppery splashes on the finish. Enjoyable. jimhilt (1664), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Oct 15, 2009 Pours a two finger cream head that faded slowly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Cloudy brown/amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Smokey caramel nose. Flavor is smokey sweetness with nice hop background. $2.00 for a 12oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT. shawnm213 (884), South Bend, Indiana, USA Oct 3, 2009 bonus beer from cletus, Thanks John! Pours brown with a nice creamy beige head. Notes of wood, chocolate, light smokiness. Decent beer. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Oct 1, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of ditmier. Pours a lightly hazy brown color with a big beige head that has good retention. The nose is faint with sweet malts, molasses and some smoke. The taste mirrors the aroma with more emphasis on the sweet malts, less on the smoke and a bit of a light toffee flavor. The palate is a bit on the thin side. The finish is short and dry. Overall: This one coulda benefited from a better hop presence and a more robust smoke flavor, but its strengths outweigh weakness, still quite tasty. wickedpete (625), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA Sep 19, 2009 Cask. Dark brown to black body with a tall froth of creamy head. Sweet maltiness, light smoke, very faint, chocolate, and licorice. Flavor of roasted malt, a bit of smoky wood, some roasted bitterness in the finish. Palate has a very nice creaminess, perfect body and mouthfeel.
